Alberta Women's Institutes Mar y Riley Women's Institute Celebrates 90th Anniversary Shirley Felker, Member T h i s past year Mary Riley Women's Institute celebrated its 90th Anniversary. On October 25, 1917 twenty-six women joined together to form Garrington WI. The name was changed to Mary Riley WI in January 1940. There are now ten members of this branch. Mary Riley Branch began at a time when Garrington WI was so large that the membership decided to divide and make two branches. The new branches were named Cottonwood and Mary Riley. These branches are still both very active. Cottonwood Branch was formed on January 6, 1935. Mary Riley Branch kept the orignal charter date of October 17, 1917. Pictured are front row left to right: Peggy Farrar, Alma Harper, Ruth Paton (President). Back row left to right: Audrey Langley, Susan Collins, Helen Hudson, Rick Hevven, Marie Sheets, Shirley Felker and Jean Reid. Mary Riley was the first President of the Garrington Branch. Mary immigrated to Canada with her husband and children. She and her husband lived on a farm in the Garrington district 14 miles west of Bowden. Mary had three sons: Tom, Frank and George and one daughter Agnus. Agnus was the only one of her children who had a family. Agnus married Mr. Houston and they had one son and one daughter. Agnus' son, Archie married Violet Munsun and they had 2 daughters and 1 son. Her daughter, Susie married Fred Tingle and they had 3 daughters and one son. On her death in 1925 Mary Riley was laid to rest in the Bowden Cemetery. Get Ready to Celebrate our 100th Anniversary Did you know? Brenda Willsie Zella Pimm Gloria Coates A committee to organize this event was set up at the January Council Meeting of the Alberta Women's Institutes. Zella Pimm and Brenda Willsie will be heading this committee along with four others. A The official celebrations will take place at our Provincial Convention to be held June 1 - 4, 2009. The Convention will be held at the Norsmen Inn in Camrose, Alberta. At this time we are calling for all creative people in this organization to submit a drawing of a logo to be used at the discretion of the Alberta Women's Institutes to promote this wonderful occasion. We must have your submission arriving at the Alberta Women's Institutes office before May 25, 2008. The committee will select a logo when they are together at the 2008 Convention. If you have any ideas for promotional items, celebration ideas etc. please contact the committee at the telephone numbers in the front of the this magazine. ll used grocery plastic bags that you return to your local CO-OP store are sent to Trex for recycling along with plastic pallet wrap used by the CO-OP warehouses. Trex decking products are created by combining recycled grocery bags and other plastic products with wood chips and sawdust. Trex has won several awards that recognize their products as an environmentally beneficial choice for decks, rails and fences. See their products at www.trex.com 12
