Alberta Women's Institutes Acadia W.I. News Brenda Dowell A Shae Fedorak points to the Brand that she traced on her quilt block. quilt show sponsored jointly by Acadia W.I. and Trochu Valley Historical Society was part of Trochu's centennial celebration. A beautiful display of quilts included three crafted almost one hundred years ago, modern quilts, those with very intricate and some with well known designs, WI quilts, friendship quilts, a quilt made by residents of Trochu' extended care lodge and a `Brand' quilt. The blocks for the `brand' quilt were traced by Grade Three students and included either their family brands or brands from pioneers of the district. Acadia W.I. and the historical society raffled the quilt and gave the proceeds to the Grade Threes who in turn donated it towards a water park which will provide fun for the children of the community. Our branch was proud to be a part of this undertaking: it was such a community project which included both improving understanding of the past for the children and a contribution to the future. Grade Three student, Shelby Winther, demonstrates the understanding that was a part of this project. "I really think that the people who created the quilt did a fabulous job! I liked Mrs. Dowell's idea to make the quilt and her idea to use the brands. I think that using the brands helps people remember the time when there were not a lot of fences and people depended on brands to keep track of their cattle." Shelby is the great granddaughter of Elsie Winther who had the record for the longest membership in WI and also exemplified much of what WI meant over the years.wi The Count Down is On! Brenda Willsie A s many members know a number of year ago at a Provincial conference in Olds, Alberta it was decided that AWI would invite all of Canada to come and see us at our finest. With only a few months before the airplanes will be landing and the cars traveling to Red Deer, Alberta I would like to update members about our plans. The Federated Women's Institutes of Canada Triennial Convention will be held June 14 to 17, 2006 at the Capri Hotel and Convention Centre in Red Deer. There is a committee of 14 members of AWI that have been working very hard to raise funds and ensure that all of the details have been looked after. The goal of the committee is to raise approximatedly $115,000.00 and we are getting close to this goal. We have received the Community Initiatives Program grant for $75,000.00 as well as a number of donations from the Branches and a few corporate donations. The fundraising committee is still working on securing more donations, as we are approximately $20,000.00 short of our goal. This is a great project for branches to support at a larger scale than the $50.00 per year for the three years as they were previously requested to do. At this time I do not have a final list of speakers and activities planned for the Convention however I feel that our national board have done everything in their power to ensure that this will be a wonderful learning experience for all of the delegates. I found that after attending the Federated Convention in Quebec in 2003 I had a whole new appreciation for Women's Institute. If you are interested in helping with the convention as a volunteer please contact Bernice Willsie at 403-224-3153 or by email at bernicew1959@hotmailcom . Bernice is the volunteer coordinator who will match up volunteers to the required jobs. This is a once in a lifetime chance to attend a Federated Convention that is this close to home as well as be a member of a hosting province. To register for the Convention and enjoy a few days of sharing ideas and making new friends in Women's Institute contact Brenda Willsie for a registration package at 403-224-3153 or email blwillsie2005@hotmail.com . If you have any questions please contact either Brenda Willsie or Phyllis Kosik and we will do our best to answer your questions.
