Home and Country Fall 2005 President Elect Darlene Wicks, President Elect C an you picture getting into your car without a key?? It does sound like science fiction but in fact it is taking the car industry by storm as more manufacturers are offering such keyfree systems. How does it work? Remote keyless system functions are found in small, hand-held, buttonless "fobs" attached to a key chain and/or built into the ignition key handle. They can include both a remote keyless entry (RKE) system and a remote keyless ignition system (RKI). The fob sends radio signals to the car. When the car senses its fob, the doors unlock or lock. (You don't need to even take your fob out of your purse or pocket.) And it can unlock the trunk, too. If the car has RKI, the seat will adjust to your pre-designated settings (steering wheel height, seat adjustment, etc.) Then you push a button on the dashboard to start the car, and you're on your way. (You just need to have your fob in the car.) I have enjoyed all of the branch secretary reports and letters that I have received. Every branch does so much for their community that I do think we are selling ourselves short on the hours that we volunteer and on the value of what we donate. If you are selling tickets on the quilts you need to include your volunteer hours as you are doing this for W.I. If you donate anything to the food bank, give awards, do a silent auction, donate lunch, give baby clothes, or make tray favors for the hospital just to name a few please include a dollar value on your donated items. If you have missed including any donations or volunteer hours please include them on your next secretary report. For the F.W.I.C. 2006 Committee, new Constituency Conveners and District Directors please include your hours and donations on your branches secretary reports. The secretary reports that I have received to date show the total volunteer hours as 10,456. So ladies keep reporting your volunteer hours and donations and let us see how high we can get. When you are completing the Provincial Dues Statement please note that the Pool Rate must be included with your Payment of Dues and the Home & Country. The Pool Rate is used to help offset part of the mileage cost for a delegate to attend the AWI Annual Convention when they have to travel more than 120 km or 75 miles. This pool rate does help a lot of branch delegates who drive long hours to attend our convention. The Pool Rate must be paid with the provincial dues or a delegate driving beyond the 120 km or 75 miles will not get a payout at the Annual Convention. If your branch is lucky enough to be close to the convention please pay the pool rate to help the others who are not. When a branch gets smaller, members start to think about disbanding and at this time you should talk to the Constituency Convener. The Constituency Convener can give your branch some ideas of other alternatives. A decision like this should not be a secret. If you decide to disband you need to notify all of the members of the branch, the Constituency Convener, and the District Director at least one month prior that you have a notice of motion to disband. This gives the members notification that they should attend this meeting, voice their opinions, and the vote should be by secret ballot. The Constituency Convener and the District Director will come to the meeting and give you information on the choices that you have before you vote. The reason for this is to ensure that all of the members know what options they have and that one person is not dictating the decision for all of the members. If you are having problems and do not tell anyone, then no one has a chance to try and fix the problem. While we do not like to lose branches, I do know that it does happen. Some branches have two or three members and keep going and I applaud you and all of the branches that are still making such a difference in their community. With every small town losing volunteer organizations we need to keep our W.I. branches going. We do make a difference and we do have people in the communities that count on our organization to volunteer.wi 3
