Alberta Women's Institutes District Three Alice Lowis, District Three Director Spotlight on the Branches of District 5 Blanche Cunningham, District Five Director I t has been another busy time f o r all of us in W. I . , first the Council meeting in January, then p r e p a r a t i o n for various visits to Constituencies. I visited three of my constituency Conferences, planned to visit Esther, which was cancelled due to stormy weather and the Kneehill conference at Trochu missed due to my husband's illness. During this busy time, district Three Workshop was held at Bashaw with a great attendance again. `Hank' the cowboy from the W.I. Ranch (fictitious) shocked the gathering with a hold up which raised $70.00 for animals on the Ranch. The mural for the ranch will be at the Federated Convention in 2006. If you purchase animals, see the front page of the Spring Home and Country; your name will be on whatever you purchase. Next came the annual Convention in Red Deer with a wonderful attendance, the best in a few years. We had such interesting speakers everyone enjoyed them. Also the fun night a n d during Wednesday's session, `Hank' AKA Gloria Coates struck again with a bang! His cap gun startled everyone! This robbery garnered $300 to go to the Ranch. The quilt display was awesome, with over 450 turned in, a great sight as they were pinned all around the Convention Room. We did have one man at the convention, dummy Pierre, who was unfaithful to Fern and ended up bed hopping from Brenda Willsie's bed to Blanche Cunningham's bed. Just a practical joke we enjoyed. I will be moving to Camrose in July. My new address is 6A Grand Park Crescent, Camrose, T4V 2K6 and telep h o n e number is 780-672-4312. P l e a s e send all mail to my new address.wi W.I. M i l n e r to n W. I . organized in October 1917, was named after the Milner School located 17 miles east and 7 miles south of Innisfail. The 9 active members enjoy fellowship and extending a helping hand to local charities. They report excellent attendance in over 87 years of community service. W.I. G o rd o n W. I ., located south and west of Innisfail, was organized July 1938 and named after the Gordon School. The 8 active members enjoy their informal meetings, summer tours, and afternoon teas. They boast a pictorial history of WI events of over half a century. They are proud of their secretary, Beryl Grey, who has held this position (forever they say) and is still doing an excellent job at age 88. W.I. L one Pine W. I ., located east of Didsbury, was organized September 6, 1924 and named after the Lone Pine District. A man from Sundre planted a lone pine at the hall one Halloween night and thus the name "Lone Pine." Wilf Carter and Pete Knight were once featured at this hall. Six of the eight members are active catering, serving tea at nursing homes and supporting local libraries at Midway School and Didsbury. Ellen Richardson was a former District Director. Centre W.I. Rush Centre W. I . is located near Esther, Alberta with 6 members, all farmer's wives. Organized in 1916, it was named after the local school. The members enjoy garden tours, catering, and helping where needed. They have published two cookbooks, helped publish in 1991 the local history book, Sage Brush and Sifting Sand, the first Esther History Book in 1960, and the History of Rush Centre WI. J a c ks o n W. I . , near Cremona, Alberta was organized in December 1953. The W.I., branch got its name from the local school district. The branch supports both community and WI projects. Nellie Davis, branch life member and over 90 years of age, has knit over 300 pairs of slippers and preemie bonnets for the Calgary Children's Hospital. Two families, the Ethel and Alex Robertson family in 1959 and the Elma and Lionel Bird Family in 1966 have received the Master Farm Family Award. Past District Directors include Ethel Robertson, Holly Hallett, Noreen Olson, and Darlene Hallett. Holly Hallett was Provincial President 1991-1993. Valle Dorcas W.I. Ve rd a n t Va l l ey & Dorc a s W. I ., 10 miles northeast of Drumheller, was organized in May 1912 and named after the local school district. They not only donate to local projects, baby articles for the health unit, toiletries for women's shelters, and support local libraries, but they also knit squares to send to Zambia to make into afghans. Verdant Valley WI was formed in 1912 and later in 1952 another branch was formed of younger members called Verdant Valley Dorcas. As members in Verdant Valley WI aged and decreased in numbers the members not wanting to lose their charter were granted special permission to amalgamate in 1963 with Verdant Valley Dorcas to become Verdant Valley & Dorcas WI. The branch is the oldest active branch in Alberta. Geri Shadlock has been a past District Director. wi 6
