Home and Country Summer 2005 President Elect Darlene Wicks, President Elect FWIC Executive Report Florence Bernakevitch I have accepted a new and challenging position as President Elect. I look forward to receiving and reading your Secretary Reports. I would like the members to give me your ideas, suggestions and concerns. Together we can face the challenges of the future. I For those that do not know me I have belonged to Brownies, Guides, and Job's Daughters in Lloydminster, Alberta while attending school. I married and moved to Swift Current where I worked at the Credit Union for almost 4 years. We moved to Coutts and I have three grown children. For 15 years I was a Leader for Beavers, Cubs, Brownies, Pathfinders, a Provincial Trainer, and took girls camping with residential and tenting licenses. I have worked at Canada Customs as a secretary, cashier, various clerical positions and a line officer for the last 33 years. I have been a member of the International Wild Rose W.I. Branch for the last 20 years. I have held all Branch positions, some Educational Convenerships, a Constituency Convener, and a District Director for 2 terms. My husband passed away after 30 years of marriage. I have three grand children. At present I am enjoying being retired and like the freedom it gives. It was fantastic to see all of the Blue hats at the A.W.I. Convention. The idea of the Blue Hat Challenge was first published in the FWIO magazine in Ontario. The Hamilton Area thought that W.I. should be seen as a "FUN" organization. They sprayed their hats blue and added gold decorations. They issued a challenge to all members to wear their blue hats to all WI events and other functions. I would challenge all Alberta W.I. members to make a blue hat and wear it to any place or event that you attend. The idea is that people will ask why the blue hat and it will give you a good opportunity to advertise W.I. So ladies wear your blue hats around the towns and provinces that you visit. Let us all advertise our great organization and interest potential new members. At the A.W.I. Convention the members brought in 30 centerpieces with the theme "Let's Celebrate Alberta". The winning centerpiece consisted of a crocheted doily basket with blue & white flowers. The second place winner had a covered wagon, tractor, oil well and Alberta 100 years. The voting for the centerpieces brought in $77.23. After the banquet we auctioned off 16 centerpieces and raised $125.50. Money from the centerpieces will be used to help with the A.W.I. Convention expenses. Thank you to everyone that made, voted, and purchased the centerpieces. If you are interested in getting a picture of Queen Elizabeth you can phone 1-800465-6890. It would be nice to have her picture in your branch hall or at the Constituency Conference.wi have just returned from our full FWIC board meetings, w h i c h were held in Newfoundland. What a glorious experience. The "Into the North" project has had overwhelming response. The Langdon Rebecca's saw an article in the paper and wanted to help out. They had a garage sale and baby shower and raised around $250 plus baby things. Great. The Newfoundland Government gave $5,000 to help with expenses and Air Labrador is flying the boxes from NFL. They have already shipped 17 boxes and have over 27 more to go. Many provinces have boxes waiting to be shipped. Hopefully this will help the families in the north. We are trying to get information to them about health as well as where to get needed help. The number one priority is women and child health. There is 7 times more violence in these communities. 80% face abuse. They also die younger than the rest of Canada. They have a shelter in Hopedale with 3 bedrooms and are getting a new one with 4-5 bedrooms. The ACWW project is Tanzania. Helping women with food and catering. I have no details but will get them out as soon as they are received. Last year Canada donated $36,500 to ACWW while the US donated $28,500. The pennies for friendship donations have dropped by 25%. I need some information. Could you send me the names of anyone you know who has received an FWIC Life membership? Some records have been lost. Let the communities know who we are and what we stand for. Do something special for these times as we all work for Home and Country.wi 3
