It is with concern for A.W.I. that I felt I must accept the nomination as your District One Director. I have been a member for 64 years, Constituency Convener and Director previously as well as having held most branch offices. I feel that there should be many younger members willing to accept the challenge and give this wonderful organization a new lift with new ideas and strength. It is the best learning tool that I have met. I have challenged myself to try to bring more excitement into the AWI and District One. Now it is the members who must help. Let us forget that everything costs too much and find ways to change the times to better things for Home and Country. We must keep up our image in our communities, local schools, the 4H youth, the libraries, our hospitals and senior homes. A little goes a long way. Advertise our efforts ask younger non members to help with your projects I am sure there are people out there who would like to help if they were only asked. They may feel they cannot take leadership at this time but are interested in what we are doing. I will need everyone's help to be able to carry out all my duties and I know that I can count on you all.wi I Memoir 1 `A Tree I have Known' ................. Henia J. D i s t r i c t Two Maxine Allen I was born in Viking, Alberta, which is a small town about one hundred kilometers east of Edmonton. We lived on a farm and I attended a country school called Lake Thomas. Following this I attended the Viking School. On graduation I moved to Edmonton and worked in Woodward's grocery at first and following this I worked at Alberta Government Telephones in the accounting department. I married and moved to Drayton Valley where I lived for thirty eight years. While I was at home raising two children I did a lot of volunteering at the school, cubs, and hockey and at the school of tap dancing. After the children were grown I took a course in Hemodialysis at the University Hospital and worked as a home dialysis assistant for a year and a half before working for a small oilfield company. A neighbour and very good friend invited me to a Women's Institute meeting at her home. She said I would enjoy the W.I. I went to the meeting and I joined. I have served as secretary in the Drayton Valley Branch and after moving to Stony Plain have been a Co-constituency Convener. I have many and varied interests and am looking forward to the next three years as your District Two Director of this grand World Wide Organization.wi 4
