Lbtchinson, F.W.LC. representative for the A.W.I.. attended the F.W.I.C. Board meeting held in MacDonald College, Quebec, in June 1951. IHrs C. G. Strong, of Vegreville, was secretary-treasurer of the meeting. At the 1951 convention, the Alberta Women's Institute Choir under the able leadership of Mrs. S. Lefsrud made its first appearance. The ladies came from all parts of the province and joined in ~" large choir rendering the following selections: "0 Hush Thee Baby", "Allah's Holiday", and "Calm as the Night". At this convention a scholarship was granted for a girl attendin[ the School of Agriculture newly built at Fairview, since one had been given to girls at both the Olds and Vermilion Schools. During her term of office, Mrs. McGorman was named vicepresident of the Alberta Division of the Canadian Cancer Society. and also vice-president on the Provincial Board of the Canadian Association of Consumers. At the A.W.L Council meeting in February 1952, it was decided to close out the Cancer Fund amounting to about $3,700.00, and they decided to hold Health Institute Schools in the University and in the Banff School of Fine Arts, where W.I. members coull attend and learn of the treatment of cancer and the need for early diagnosis anel about the health services given in the province. Over 300 Institute members attended these schools known as "Blue Print For Action'. and they have made good use of the knowledge gained. This was the first school of its kind in Canada. At the A.W.I. Council meeting in February 1952. it \Vas decided that a $50.00 scholarship would be given in memory of Mrs. H. J Montgomery, to be known as the Adelaide Montgomery Scholarship. It would be awarded at the Alberta Musical Festival to an Alberta girl 16 years of age or under, not living in any of the four maio! cities. anc1 for singing. It was first awarded in 1952. The 1953 Convention The 1953 convention was held in the University of ,-\iberta Convocation Hall, May 25-28 under the chairmanship of Mrs. A.. B. McGorman. The number of standing committees was revised and were to be as follows: Agriculture and Canadian Industries; Health, Educe.tion, Citizenship, Home Economics, Handicraft. and Social Services. -30-
