Possibly he has left his business to come to speak to you, so publicize the meeting beforehand and try to make him feel it was worth his time. H a W.I. Member is the Speaker, remember it takes hours of work to prepare a speech and gettting it down to a specified time. Jot down a brief outline of what you plan to say and arrange the order in which you will present it. List these. headings on a small card which you hold in your hand while talking, to guide you as you speak. Give your ideas clearly and it will add weight if you give the audience the sources of your information if you make quotes. Finish with one or two sentences which add to the climax aimed at. A few guides in presenting the address-have a business-like manner, stand up and speak to the chair. Have feet a little apart, one foot forward. Talk out clearly, extending the voice to the farthest part of the audience. Try to catch the interest of the audience at the start and continue it. You may be humorous, but you must be utterly serious. Another Successful Program is Having a Panel or Discussion Group. Have several Members, each prepared through study, taking part in different phases of the subject. The leader should be especially well prepared. It is well to have a rehearsal beforehand so all will run smoothly with no one dominating or standing back. Have some good questions ready in the audience to spark lively discussion. Full participation should be encouraged. Aim to get the Members to. think and discuss the subject, but do not try to get a definite answer. This is one of the most effective long-range methods of education. It ensures the expression and comparison of many points of view and so develops tolerance and understanding and provides the framework of sound thinking, necessary to constructive action. A Buzz Session is another interesting form of program. Divide the audience into small groups to discuss for a stated period, a question or several questions prepared in advance. The groups bring in a summary of their thinking. To be really worthwhile, all should have given the subject some study and thought in preparation for the Buzz Session. Whatever form the program takes, start the meetings on time. To encourage Members to be on time, some Branches have a little raffle at the time announced for opening and some have competitions with credit points, totalled at the end of the year and a prize awarded. Sing "0 Canada" with pride and spirit, it is in marching time, so do not drag it. Give the Flag Salute respectfully standing and with arms at sides and know the Creed we live by. Members are sometimes reluctant to belong to the Women's Institute because they have small children and do not want to take them to meetings. Plan Fays of keeping little folks happily occupied during meeting time to encourage mothers to come and bring their children. Some one can be responsible to have toys in another room or have color books and crayons or some other form of entertainment for the children. The majority of Branches favor simple lunches following the meetings. Some Branches have the hostess responsible for only the tea or coffee and one or two others provide sandwiches, cake or slices, etc., or everyone provides her own little "School Lunch." Sometimes the eats are potluck, which is very desirable if the hostess is not well or if she has extra burdens. If such is the case, bringing plenty so she has the leftovers is a 30
