Doctors -- Äi"'-- 1 determmed
humanity from the epidemic
Said HERBERT L ABRAMS Profes-so- r
of Radiology at Harvard Medical
School PSR National Co-chairm- an
and Vice President of the "Internatio-nal
Physicians for the Prevention of
Nuclear War" (IPPNVV):
"The name 'Physicians for Social Res-ponsibili- ty'
implies that we are concer-ne- d
wilh issues that häve to do with
the whole of society and the vhole
cKial organism We consider that the
ibsue of nuclear war and nuclear
wcapons is the most important the
ife and death issue of this century
PHOTO: American during their visit to of the Kiev
Research Institute of General and Communal Hygiene
"We have met a large group of phy-sicians
at difierent leels of Soviet
medicine Speaking for our yhole de-legati- on
I would say that ve are im-mense- ly
impressed by their concern
about nuclear veapons and nuclear
war
"In a nuclear var innocent bystanders
will be destroyed indiscriminately
The only way to avoid this disaster
is to reach concrete agreements on
the liquidation of nuclear wcapons"
Answering the question about the
plans to use outer space for military
purposes Dr Abrams said in part:
"My feeling and the feeling of the
PSR is thai space should be kept free
from weapons and particularly nuc-lear
weapons At present there are
some in the United States who believe
that the approach to space weapons
is defensive and their feeling is that
this will prevent the explosion of nuc-lear
weapons on American territory
But in our view this vvould set off a
new round of the arms race We feel
that arms buildup takes money away
from very important social areas
"Space belongs to ali countries of the
planet and ali countries should have
a say in whether space is militarized
and ali countries should join together
in preventing it"
Said GARY G LAPID MD a psy-chiatr- ist
from Palo Aito California:
"One of the factors that motivated my
active participation in PSR was the
film made by the organization 'The
Last Epidemic' telling of the medical
effects of nuclear varfare I realized
that we as physicians vvould have ab-solute- ly
no ability vvhatsoever to take
care of casualties even if a 'limited'
nuclear war starts I had to begin to
speak out in my country I had to
begin to educate my patients my col-leagu- es and in particular our po-liticia- ns who I thought did not truly
grasp the meaning of nuclear wea-pon- s
These weapons are the instru-ment- s
of genocide in fact — of ornni-cid- e
"Our movement is rapidly groving
in the United States The first thing
that had to take place was waking
people from their slumber making
theni have the same levelation about
nuclear arms that we had We speäk
throughout the United States in a
number of different places and ways:
on TV in churches in schools we
wrile books and make video cassettes
and films on the issue and organize
symposiums
"The last public opinion polls show
that absolute majority of Americans
understand that nuclear war should
never be fought and certainly cannot
be won
"Ve have to learn to deal with each
other in the interests of peace This
is a very interesting tiine to be alive

because ve have to find uays to
overcome a great crisis and thus to
provc once niore the immen poten-tia- l humankind has"
STANLEY NUDELMAN MD of San
Bruno California shaied his vievs:
"Basically we do not believe that
wcapons make us more säle We be-lieve
that ve must have a moratorium
on testing nuclear veapons hope-full- y
— vhile ve are getting ready
for a cmnprehcnsive test ban trcaty
We hope to evcntually have a comple- -
doctors the laboratories
te freeze on ali produclion deploy-men- t
as vell as testing of nuclear
eapons
"The strategic defense initiativc the
star wars which I know the USSR
is very strongly opposed to is one of
the issues our physicians are also
opposed to They feel this vill increase
the arms race becauso the simplcst
way to overcome star vars is to build
more wcapons We feel that the whole
concept of moving nuclear war into
outer space is very bad and wc must
put a stop to that
"We feel ihat peace will not come
through tactical means like star
wars it will come only through ne-gotiatio- ns
through international mett-ing- s
We are not naive and wc know
that people in different countries are
different But there is some similarity
that unitcs ali: the people of ali coun-tries
vant poju:
"The 'International Physicians for
the Prevenlioil of Nuclear War' bclice
in a no-firft-stri- ke policy and the So-viet
Union has come one on record
The United States has not yet Many
think that nuybe that is mostly vords
vhile what we need is action but
even so I would like to see the Unit-ed
States to come on record too"
JEFFREY ! PATTERSON DO As-soci- ate
Professor University of Wis-consin
Medical School member of the
board of directors of the National
PSR had this to say:
"If we don't prevent nuclear war then
health care research and ali the other
tliings physicians are doing are irre-levant- to
us Our visit here is aimed at
increasing Communication with Soviet
physicians We should begin to work
together on our common problem One
of such possibilities is the forthcoming
meeting between Mr Gorbachov and
Mr Reagan"
DAVID PAUL FRASZ MD an eye
physician and surgcon from Dover-Foxcro- ft
Maine addcd:
"It is important for Soviet doctors to
come to the United States to teli our
people firsthand what they are doing
to educate their people in antinuclear
spirit And it is important for us to
come to the Soviet Union We need
to open the doors between the two
countries so that we understand each
other better understand our likenes-se- s
and diiferences And of rourse
physicians can do a lot but this has
io be supported by exchange on cul-tur- al
level on Scientific level and
economic level We have to understand
that even if life is preserved after the
possible holocaust a dark and bleak
life this would be with ali the magni-fice- nt cultural achievements of human
civilization vanished in a flame of
nuclear warfare"
