happy event indeed From the
successful Saturday night din-n- er
with accordian music by
Alec Hunnakko and the full
orchestra dance to the program
and luncheon of Sunday for the
"ikinuoret" it was old home
week for us ali where we remi-nisce- d
with old friends of many
years
As the organizers — Will
and Betty Böhm George and
Lillian Gustafson Ossi and
Kirsti Luoma Henry and Elsie
Saloranta and others like
Henry Huhtanen said it was to
be a reunion of the 50 year old
generation who had been active
at Tarmola and Työn Puisto
and The Finnish Canadian
sports dramas recreation and
cultural activities of the 1940's
and 1950's — the gymnastics
track and field dances study
groups and music
They came from ali over —
Florida Sudbury Ottawa
Toronto and other points in
Canada and the USA
They were purely happy
memories for ali those 50 year
olds when they had the oppor-tunit- y
to serve Sunday lunch for
the senior members of the Finn-ish
"Ikinuortenkerho" and the
staunchy old guard of the Finn-ish
Organization and the
FCASF
The senior citizens fiilly
appreciated the luncheon served
to them on Sunday but from
comments overheard they
would appreciate even more the
continuity of their Finnish
cultural heritage =in some form
by the younger Canadian Finn-ish
The program Sunday was-interestin- g
with gymnastics
choir singing music a display
of the art of self-defen- ce by
Larry Hunnakko and Rönny
Havimäki and rhythmic möye-men- ts
by Patsy Heikkilä and
Kaarina Dillibough
Nbw'that the reunion has

younger members of the Finn-ish
Canadian Community with
talents where do they go from

What are the positive pos-sibiliti- es
in this affair? Is it a
nostalgic meeting of old friends
reminiscing of old happier days
at Tarmola Työn Puisto etc
or a look ahead to some creative
cultural or recreational activity
that'will gladden the hearts of
the aging parents or grandpar-ent- s
as they themselves become
less able to carry on with their
gymnastics folk dances choirs
and music
Perhaps an opportunity has
arisen to prove yourselves It
was decided at the recent "Lau-lujuhlat"
(Annual Singing Fes-tiva- t)
held in Sudbury May 1 7th
and 1 8th that the next festival
would be held in Toronto Vic-toria
Day weekend 1981 May
we suggest that here is the op-portunity
the challenge for
participation in a unique tra-dition
the Finnish Organiza-tion
and FCASF singing
Festival held annually for about
50 years in so many Finnish
Canadian centres originally —
Toronto Sudbury Port Arthur
Timmins South Porcupine
Kirkland Lake Beaver Lake
Vancouver and öthers to a
small handful today
Will you today allow this
rich heritage to die without a
challenge to 'new effort to new
forms of performing art per-haps!
Are there Canadian mu-tatio- ns
of Finnish forms of art
and entertainment drama —
that you can study — improvise
— develop?
We welcome the suggestion
made from Thunder Bay at the
recent "Laulujuhla" committee
meeting that the drama group of
Kaministiquia practising at the
Finnish Hall be invited to put
on their original play about the
district co-operat- ive movement
It has recently toured the Atlan-tic
Provinces
What about it? Henry Huh-tanen
active in the Bramalea-Brampto- n
theatre could you do
a play for next spring either
from Brampton or with metro
area Finnish Canadians?
Where is that new singing group
that we so enjoyed at the Finn-ish
Hall? Have we not many
musicians who play different
instruments seriously or for
personal satisfaction and enjoy-men- t?
I particulary challenge the
choir singers young and old to
continue the choral traditions of
the Finnish Organization and
other ethnic groups — more
modest than the Shevchenko
Choir of the Ukranian Cana-dians
— but they can be our
inspiration
