PAULI RINNE believes his
theatre to be unique And it is
At 40 years of age Rinne is
chief director of the Finnish
Drama Theatre in Petroza-vodsk
capital of Karelia
His company is unique in
that it performs only in Fin-nish
Nowhere else — except in
Finland of course! — is there a
Finnish national theatre
though there are people of
Suomi origin in many parts of
the vvorld
Even in the Soviet Union the
theatre represents a mere 08
percent of the total popula-tio- n
But that does not limit its
audience
"Definitely not" says
Rinne "our house is ahvays
full
"This can be explained not
so much by the fact that ali
our performances are
simultaneously interpreted
but rather by the existence of a
different perception — the
emotional psychological one
'This is the perception of
the heart the soul
"If we communicate with
our audience on such a level
linguistic differences are of
secondary importance"
Small-tow- n theatre has its
problems of course but this
one does its best to avoid the
most obvious
The theatre has six first
nights each year changing hai f
its repertoire annually
It also touis the republic
both the large cities and the
smallertowns
There is of course no
ready-mad- e recipe for a suc-cessf- ul
ethnic theatre
"I believe that an ethnic
theatre must avoid hmiting
itself to national plays only"

art ofbuilding For the Finnish
male this need is satisfied al-m- ost
completely by a woman

So says professor Timo

Oh Karelia? by Antu
Tomonen
"And naturally we have a
stage version of the national
Karelo-Finnis- h epic The
Kalevala "
The theatre also performs
foreign classical and modern
plays — those by Shakespeare
Moliere Ibsen Brecht Capek
Miller Lassia and Vuolijoki
"In choosing a play we
don't limit ourselves byany
class consideration neither do
we let ourselves be misled by
one-da- y fashions
"The main thing is to
choose vvorks of a serious
topical nature" says Rinne
emphatically
"We try to provoke and res-pon- d
to topical problems of
