US Complicity in 1981
Chemical Mass Murder
In 1981 a number of US
Japanese and Brazilian Chemi-cals
firms carriedout a series of
defoliation experiments in the
Brazilian Amazon basin which
resulted in the liquidation of
entire village communities
through the extermination of
some 7000 peopie
At the time little or no news of
the atrocity was known and it is
only recently that facts surrounding
it have come to light These were
made public in a report submitted to
the Director of the United Nations
Environmental Programme (UNEP)
The 600 page report compiled by
Sonia Regina de Brito Pereita the
President of the Brazilian ecological
group the Movement for the Preser-vatio- n
of Life states that under the
pretext of constructing hydroelectric
installations 3000 square kilometers
of Amazonian forest vvere razed The
chemicals used in the operation vvere
of a similar composition to the
dioxine agents used by the US
against the peopie of Vietnam
According to the report three
major chemicals companies vvere

(Brazil) After having contaminated a
sizable area of forest attempts vvere
made on 6 September 1981 to
conceal the evidence by flooding the
region Over 2400 square kilometers
vvere submerged in vvater leaving a
small portion of the destruction
visible Examination of this area by
Brazilian scientists provided much of
the information from vvhich the
report vvas compiled
That the contamination served
certain military interests can be
inferred from the fact that o
attempts vvere made to evacuate the
local population beforehand The
only reason for this vvould be so the
effects of the defoliants on the
peopie in the region could be
assessed
Since the report vvas made
public on 17 September this year
the attempts by the US Japanese
and Brazilian ruling circles to
hush-u- p the vvhole affair have been
conspicuous by the absence of any
ansvver to the report other than
