OSVVALD E LUOMA Surulla ja ilmoitamme että rakkaamme
by Elsie Jokinen
It is not easy to say your
final farewells at any time but
it is even more difficult when
that someone is a close personal
friend A friend not only to me
mut a friend to us ali
Oz for ali these
years and having been involved
with him in so many of our
mutual endeavours does make it
easier to reflect on his life I am
so honoured to have been asked
to do so
Because Oz was a contradict-io- n
a complex man with vari-e- d
interests involved with
many of us in different acti-viti- es
but a simple man too
who believed strongly in the
rights of human beings to a
decent life
Of his 54 years I have known
Oz for 40 of them He was one
of the few of us who were ac-tual- ly
born in Toronto Life was
not easy for Oz in his early
years Like many of us he was
not sure what he wanted and
where he was going Until Kirs-ti!
I can proudly say I introduc-e- d
them to each other at a dance
at Tarmola many years ago
Kirsti became not only his
dance partner but his life
partner
Oz was always a family man
first and foremost His parents
Hilma and Eino ahvays com-mand- ed
his full respect and
affection My own mother was
ahvays happy to have Oz in our
home because he knew and car-e- d
of ali ages Mom
said and she was correct "He
was brought up right in a lov-in- g
home to respect and admire
his parents" Oz was alvvays
"that nice Ossie"
And hovv proud Oz was of his
lady Kirsti He would kid about
the "old lady" but with such
tenderness and pride Kirsti
gave Oz a meaning in life She
also gave him two beautiful
daughters Kaarina and Liisa
and if his pride in Kirsti was
bountiful it was tvvofold in his
girls He often kidded about his
"house full ofwomen" buthow
he loved them
Oz's Finn was impeccable ijspsra

Although he
spoke Finn like a native Like
his parents he and Kirsti raised
the girls to be equaily as
comfortable in both languages
and they've done him proud
Ozzie was proud to be a Finn
prouder to be a Finnish Ca-nadian
Politically Oz was always a
pacifist a firm believer in the
rights of ali men to a decent and
honest living His politics were
his religion Oz was alvvays ac-tive- ly
involved in the peace mo-veme- nt
not merely as a
"closet" supporter but a true
believer who was alvvays ready
to put his money or his time
vvhere his mouth was He truly
believed in peace amongst ali
peoples and lived by his
In the Finnish
in the Yritys Athletic Club-C- lub
Donvvay he was alvvays
an active participant Some-tim- es
as a silent partner Oz
never needed the limelight but
quite ready to stand up for his
convictions vvhen the need
arose He vvas involved in
athletics in gymnastics in the
choir in play s in the band ( a
special love of his) and vvhen
not in any of the above in the
audience He supported be-cause
he truly believed in what
he vvas supporting Oz could
alvvays be counted on to help
if he volunteered or vvas
"coerced" into a job he came
through You never had to
vvorry about Oz missing a
rehearsal a meeting an
You could alvvays
make book on Oz's vvord
My ovvn personal memories of
my dear friend are a lifetime's
vvorth He took me to my first
football game and vve froze to-get- her
as he tried to explain the
ups and dovvns Many a jazz
concert vve sat or stood
through vvith me screaming
vvith ali the rest and Oz just
nodding his head in time vvith
the music and tapping his foot
I conned him into blind dates
vvhen I needed a date for a
friend and many's the time he
me home from a
late night at the Don Hall He
"babysat" me through some
sad and times
and expected nothing in return
He vvas my true friend and I
loved him dearly
Oz had "spin-off-" families too
