'''1! #" Ylti v " ' taiMi l! 1 'jVi AKK -- ——--- WWWWWWWWWWW'l xm IWMWMaWlBWltfBlwBlMHwlEwCWMwlWHwHwllC "V4M m EULOGY TÖ A FRIEND 7 ' ' 'A OSVVALD E LUOMA Surulla ja ilmoitamme että rakkaamme by Elsie Jokinen It is not easy to say your final farewells at any time but it is even more difficult when that someone is a close personal friend A friend not only to me mut a friend to us ali Oz for ali these years and having been involved with him in so many of our mutual endeavours does make it easier to reflect on his life I am so honoured to have been asked to do so Because Oz was a contradict-io- n a complex man with vari-e- d interests involved with many of us in different acti-viti- es but a simple man too who believed strongly in the rights of human beings to a decent life Of his 54 years I have known Oz for 40 of them He was one of the few of us who were ac-tual- ly born in Toronto Life was not easy for Oz in his early years Like many of us he was not sure what he wanted and where he was going Until Kirs-ti! I can proudly say I introduc-e- d them to each other at a dance at Tarmola many years ago Kirsti became not only his dance partner but his life partner Oz was always a family man first and foremost His parents Hilma and Eino ahvays com-mand- ed his full respect and affection My own mother was ahvays happy to have Oz in our home because he knew and car-e- d of ali ages Mom said and she was correct "He was brought up right in a lov-in- g home to respect and admire his parents" Oz was alvvays "that nice Ossie" And hovv proud Oz was of his lady Kirsti He would kid about the "old lady" but with such tenderness and pride Kirsti gave Oz a meaning in life She also gave him two beautiful daughters Kaarina and Liisa and if his pride in Kirsti was bountiful it was tvvofold in his girls He often kidded about his "house full ofwomen" buthow he loved them Oz's Finn was impeccable ijspsra Viimeiset terveiset OSSI LUOMA Sydämellisin osanottomme omaisille Kivirannat Toronto Ontario ks§g&£&&&&£&&&&&il y&vwwtswwwww $SWWtfWirf&t&& 10 Although he spoke Finn like a native Like his parents he and Kirsti raised the girls to be equaily as comfortable in both languages and they've done him proud Ozzie was proud to be a Finn prouder to be a Finnish Ca-nadian Politically Oz was always a pacifist a firm believer in the rights of ali men to a decent and honest living His politics were his religion Oz was alvvays ac-tive- ly involved in the peace mo-veme- nt not merely as a "closet" supporter but a true believer who was alvvays ready to put his money or his time vvhere his mouth was He truly believed in peace amongst ali peoples and lived by his In the Finnish in the Yritys Athletic Club-C- lub Donvvay he was alvvays an active participant Some-tim- es as a silent partner Oz never needed the limelight but quite ready to stand up for his convictions vvhen the need arose He vvas involved in athletics in gymnastics in the choir in play s in the band ( a special love of his) and vvhen not in any of the above in the audience He supported be-cause he truly believed in what he vvas supporting Oz could alvvays be counted on to help if he volunteered or vvas "coerced" into a job he came through You never had to vvorry about Oz missing a rehearsal a meeting an You could alvvays make book on Oz's vvord My ovvn personal memories of my dear friend are a lifetime's vvorth He took me to my first football game and vve froze to-get- her as he tried to explain the ups and dovvns Many a jazz concert vve sat or stood through vvith me screaming vvith ali the rest and Oz just nodding his head in time vvith the music and tapping his foot I conned him into blind dates vvhen I needed a date for a friend and many's the time he me home from a late night at the Don Hall He "babysat" me through some sad and times and expected nothing in return He vvas my true friend and I loved him dearly Oz had "spin-off-" families too His accociates inthe 7th Toron-to Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery Band This vvas a very large prrt of Oz's life for as long as I can remember There vvere Kesän kauneimmat kukat OSSI LUOMAN muistolle VAPPU JA ALLAN TYYSKÄ Toronto Ontario OSSI LUOMA nukkui ikiuneen kotonaan Scarborough'ssa heinäkuun 11 1983 Hän oli syntynyt Torontossa marraskuun 21 1929 ollen kuollessaan 53 vuoden ikäinen Perheen kanssa lähinnä jäivät Hannes-en- o ja Helmi-tät- i South Eero-set- ä ja muut sukulaiset Suomessa sekä puolison omaiset Hautaus toimitettiin Jerretfs Funeral Homeissa heinäkuun 15 1983 Siunauksen toimitti pastori R Hepolehto Sä lähdit mutta olet lähelläni ja liki sydäntäni Jäi kaipuu syvä polttava Nuku unta rauhaisaa rakkaani KIRSTI mukaasi kaivaten hymy We would extend our heartfielt thanks ali those friends who say farewell our beloved and ali you who flovvers and good vvishes Your donations the Heart are greatly We vvould special thanks Sulo Niemi Helgiand Hedda Leppik Jean and Bob the Family The vvas immemorable occasion thanks Gail Hakala's singing and Elsie Jokinen's and George McCormick's eulogies We vvould also the pallbearers and Don who played "The the gravesite KAARINA LIISA HILMA EINO rehearsals concerts marches Santa Claus parades vvhen used the corner and shout and vvave as he marched by He vvas very proud of his affiliation vvith the band and spoke of them as they pait of his family His job vvith armor Elevator vvas alvvays more than a job Many a party Oz missed vvas late for because of a job got called in for His friends the summer cottage Catchakoma also another partof Oz's family Anyone arriving Luoma's dock could alvvays be assured a a handshake and a drink And often vvhen Ozzie decided do the visit-in- g he vvas ready party long after everyone else had gone His associates in Tarmo Club vvere friends as vvell as business associates He took his seriously his invest-men- ts became his Oz vvas indeed a people person! I vvould be remiss I didn't mention the special friends-hi- p betvveen Oz and Sulo a friendship vvhich deepened they found they indeed cousins Sulo's family became pait of Ozzie's family Similarly I became "mother" tvvo of the greatest guys this earth!
