Pointing at some of these beautiful
decorations, I mentioned to our trans-lator
that this Festival^ must Oiave
cost the German people a great deal
of money for flags alone. "Oh, yes"
was his simple reply, "but It Is better
to spend a little money thls way than
to spend much money oh war.''
And this was the attltude of ali
of. our German friends. The. German
people want peace. And they have
good reason to. Not many yedrs ago,
they lost nearly everythfng—they lost
many of their families and~ friends:
their homes and citles were nearly
•xjtally destroyed. •We went throug-h
one area which stretched for miles
and which was only rubble, plles of
brlcks and ashes. twisted glrders and
hoUoTV shells. We learned tihat these
heaps of rubble used to be the homes
and factorles of the people of Dres-den.
In Berlin, too, we couldn't. go
a block without seeing these remtod-ers
of war.' No -»onder the German
people want peace. The ruins remind
them daily of war and of their re-sponsibllity
to letting Hitler mislead
them as he did. To-day, they reallze
their mistake and also th^t they do
have a future—of theh: own. They xire
worktog hard, rebuildinö'theh: country
— bullding THEIR n6w'Germany
from the rfllns of the old. And when
they thfey get their country'Tebullt,
they want to keep It that way-
"Preundsdhaft" became truly an
toternational word at the Festival.
It means "Friendshlp" and was used
as a greeting by ali. There were 26,000
of us foreign delegates and to most
cases we couldn't understand each
othcrs languages, but nevertheless, we
got along fine, for we knew one: word
—the only reaUy important vord.
"Freundschaft". X roust have used
that wQrd thousands of times during
the tbree weeka from wben X wa8 flrst
greeted by a young German at the
flrst German boxder town reception to
the last tlme I sald "Freundschaft" as
we lef t Berlto and our newly-aqulred
friends. •
Those two weelui of the Festival
were Just crammed full of thlngs to
do and see. Tliere were the events of
the Eleventh World University
Games; there were dozens of dlfferent
cultural programmes every day;. there
were the toteresting eidhibltions of art
brought by tiearly every country;-
there were speclal receptlons for us;
and there 'were the demonstratlons
for peace. If the Festivar had been
for six weeks Instead of t«o. maybe
we could have seen nearly everythtog
we ivanted to. Sut, as was, by betog
on the go ali the tlme, we did see a
good deal. :
On August 12Ö1, the youn^ Ger-mans
had a demonstratlon for peace
and against the remilltarization of
West Germany.. One mlllion two
hundred thousand young Germans
marched wlth their blue shirts, flags
banners and huge placards demand-
Ing peace and expressing their desire
for /'unified peace>loving Germany."
West Germany, too, was represented
— by 36,000 youth. Two hundred
thousand had planned to come, but
theh- govemment banned the Festival
and ordered armed soldiers to stop
them. In spite of this. the youth risk-ed
their Ilves trying to come over and
five were killed to the attiempt. Four
were shot and one was drowned. The
coura^eous yotmg Germans 8howed
that no amount of guns, soldiers and
bans can stop the youHh from de-monstrattog
their desire .for peace.
Looktog back at the Festival, the
fh-st t h i n g i see are the faces of the
many wonderful friends we made. I
see the happy faces of our hosts, the
German youth^ I see our Italian,
Chtoese, Sovlet, Hungarian and Czec-holovakian
friends. I see also the
bappy, yet sad, Koreans. And I ask:
"Must vire flght with them?"

and now It Is up to us Canadlans to
see that the next tlme we meet, it wlll
again be to friendshlp and not i n War!

seemed to be able to get everybody
together at the same tlme. Last night

The Isku regulars were there: Unto,
Harold and Paul tossing around the
medicine ball; Olavi and yours truly
trytog to fracture themselvcs on the
mat: and. lo and behold! even our
globe-trotting Ahti viaa trying his
darndest to stand on his hands. Sel­ma
waa on the rlngs showlng off her
muscles to Pirkko and Auli yho
weren*t much Impressed. Even In­grid
came i n the looked at the pro-ceedings
probably tihinklng that home
was never Itke this. An scurrying
around in ali thls bedlam were the
little boys: Harold, Paul, George, and
A l l a n (excuse pleaäe, I nearly forgot
A l l a n Is no longer in this group having
been promoted to a big boy>. There
were even two littlb glrls there, prob­ably
mlxed in by some freak of Mother
Nature. Then the door banged open
and In marched—what? Am I seeing
things—the iNorbh Branch " E l o " boys;
A l l a n Lampalnen, tJhe three Pudas
brothers, follqwed by Willy Gronroqs
who has promlsed to bring them even
i f he had to drag them by the hair.
Maybe I shouldri't call them boys be-cause
they've probably been shavlng
for a few years, but they're ali boys to
us r even dlrector George Salvo who
claims that he at Icast feels like one.
The boys practised up a blt on their
"sauvalllkkeet" (wand drill to you).
There were eleven of us trying to
make like a dlsplay of perfect co-ordination
but it seemed as though
v e vere a blt off. But there's still
nine months to go to the Liittojuhlat
and we intend to 6how up some people,
especially you girls who have ruled
the roost for too long, Before I for-get
I should mention an Isku irre-gular,
Rayner by name. who for some
reason sat in the comer ali evening.
Therest of us made a pledge that he
is going to pick up a "sauva" next
tlme even If we have to glue it to his
ihands. Besides we need one more to
make aneven dozen.

tells me that he vas Just as eager
as the rest of us to get going again,,
The meeting got going a little be­fore
nine and for once we had a

for programme nun^ers, one for the
CSJ.40th Anniversary and the other
for the International Co-Op. 25th
Anniversary. Both were glven a fav-ourable
reply.
We also heard a dtsturbtog report
that Toronto "Yritys'* Is planning to
scd three boxcar loads of athletes here
next summer and not glve Isku one
point. This came as a shock because
i t is apparently clear that the tostl-gators
of this plot must be illlterate or
else they would have read my mathe-matlcal
theory accordlng to . whldh
Isku wlll win the majority of polnts.

"Yritys" Have a Bold Program
For AU-Round Club Activities

Toronto.— The usual thursday night
gymn is i n full swing. Ohlldrens
classes (the very little ones that is)
wlll be on Simday morntogs from now
on. Adults classes in the gymn will be
on Sunday mornings also. The hockey
team is practlsing with a much larger
turn out than last years and basket
ball has become a regular club activlty.
The basket ball Is going to be to the
International Sports League and we
are trying very hard to rent a basket
ball floor for our own use.
In the educatlonal fleld, we have
started our newspoper an 8 page
tabloid, called the "Yritys" Spark.
This Is one reason for the purchase of
the dupllcator. We have mailed a
copy to the Vapaus and wlll be send-
Ing one to ali our slster clubs to the
"Uitto". We will matotato thlis'practise
of dlstribution.

SO crowded by youth of all races, co-lors
and creeds. The dance wa8 a
success for the International Sports
Leagtie and a great llft for the " Y -

Together wlth these mentioned club
activities we have begun to work on
a drive to tocourage ihembers to join
the FiimlBh Organlzatlon of Canada
and to take part In their cultural pro-granune.
It will be noted around the
hali this year that there will be more
young people seen to the cholr and
the band of the F.O. of C. dramatics.
A fault of many clubs to our " L i i t ­to"
especially " Y r i t y s " has been saylng
too much, dotog too little. Ootog over

of thls. But I assure every
reader that the facts stated jiere are
true and forcasts for the future are

At the club general meeting on
October 2, 1951, the executive pre-sented
a financlal budget of over
$3,000 for the comlng year. It seemed
like a overwhelming amount, but the
memberahip accepted the respons-
Iblllty of reach tog that flgure. Though
nearly 2/3s. of thls amount is for our
"LUttojuhla" expenses many new
tesLUixes were also included. The app-roval
to buy a duplicating machtoe
wa8 inomedlate, and ^ grant to.,the
hockey team f or uniforms wa8 passed.
Inunediate'vork on setting up a club
Office and llbraty was begtto and
provision wa8 made for the rental ot
a gymnasium for basket b a ^ enthus-iasts.
But not only did we pian how
to spend our money. we began rlght
away to start Che .money comihsr i n.
The pian up to the'New Year are like

But the cultural programme of the F,
O. of C. is not the only reason for the
effort. The executive and leaders of
" Y r i t y s " reallze the great necessety
of working closely wlth the F. O. of C,
In actuality, though there is the "jär­jestö"
and the " L i i t t o " , we must thlnk
for peace and the cultural life of the
Finnish communlty In Canada. •We
must reallze that we together are a
strong element In peoples cause in
our great country and young people
must know. Weil the struggle and the
accomplishments of the F. O- of C.
and the F. C. A. T. F. so that wlien
they take over the relna of leaderöhlp
the guldance and lesaons at the past
wlll be with them. '
The objectives set by the club are
not the easlest to reaöh but the en-thusiasts
and the willlng co-flperatlon
are higher than In many years past.
We are certain that we wlll be able to
accomplish our tasks as mentioned
and are certaln we wlll be up in Port
Arthur next' summer with perhapa
the largest group we sent out of To­ronto
for a "Liittojuhla". >

Flashing my press card at him I asked
him, "To what do you owe your great
fortune?"
"Pluck, my boy," he boomed at me,
"Pluck, pluck. p l u c k l"
"Qulte true." I replled. "But won't
you teli our readers whom you pluck-ed?"
Needless to say I dldn*t get an
aaswer but I stlli wr6te the story
wlth the headllne, "Millionaire Pluck-ed
People!" It ran for the iflrat edi­tion.

me. It was pure Jealousy, because I
had scooped him.

And of course nearly everybody has
heard about th6 tlme I was revlewlng
the movlcs. One day a Hollywood pro-ducer
happened to drop into town and
