\ and prepared a remarkable series
' of books and documents known as
, the Upanishads. This series notes
the philosophic change of basis
from Polytheism to Monotheistic
< Pantheism. No apology is made for

' are convenient short-hand means of
discussing certain ideas. Rather

'\ tion of the ideas each time that it
appears, such recurring ideas are
> so-named' to shorten discussions.
', The ideas behind the names are
relatively simple, but the laziness
-vvhich most of us have become ac-
: \ customed to has made such reading

pulling out the dictionary seems to
be a lost art. In this example the
, explanation wili be made to show
how easy it is, but future use of
such terms vvithout explanation will

Polytheism ~(Gr. Polus, many;
theos, god). A theory that Divine
reality is numerically multiple,
that there are many gods. Similar-

ali; theos, god). The doctrine that
reality comprises a single, being; of
which ali things are modes, mo-ments,
members, appearances or
projections. Thus the movement
was away from the belief in many
gods to the belief in one god, or
basic; principle (monotheistic) and
the presence of this god 'or prin­ciple
in ali things (pantheism).
The other 'gods were not elimi'
nated, but remained in a super-human
but lesser role. One might
analogize their new. position with
that of the angels in the Christian
religion. \
• The Upanishads can apparently
be isummarized f in five main philo-spohic
ideas; Firstly, the basis, or
unchanging: enduring something
vvhich does not change eventhough
the^outer forms may change in
time,-; the ultimate reality, isi called
Brahma. i ,
Secondlyi the individual basic self
IS called Atman. It is in reality
identical with Brahma, but in a
restricted sense.' The universal self
or Brahma is spreadthroughout the
universe and is present in the: indi-.
vidual as Atman. When you take
a bottle of water from the ocean,
it is now enclosed and takes the
form of the vessel holding it, but
the water is still the • very same as
the water^ in the ocean. ,
ThircQy, ' a l i of the external world
is illusory (Maya)i and it exists
.only in relation to the'self. This
is a good example of our Western
idea of idealism which we shall
consider more f u l l y at a later time.
A very restricting, but possibly i l -
luminating example may be giyen.
The external world appears to us
to exist. However we have only
our' imperfect senses to gather data
which is brought together in the
mind to give impressions. These
impressions may, however. be m-coirect
since the data fed to the
mind may be incorrect or incom-plete.

Fourthly, life, is evil and the indi-viduars
climb to unity with Brah­ma,
or enlry into Nirvana, is a
fight agamst the temptations and
snares of outward pleasures.
Fifthly,;existence involves the i n -
finite sense of re-birth: or reincar-;.
nation withprogress orregressde^
pending: upon one*s lastv life; This
material or worldly existence is
thought to be an undesirable
struggle. Left ,as such, this theory
would leave us with the idea of
hopelessnesSi: a , never-ending . pro-cession
of lives. The great ad-vance
made by the Upanishads
gives an answer to this infinite
series. The hope is held out to the
believers • of: »• fmal release from
this endless cycle. By advancing.up
the scale steadily.re-birth after.re-birth;
ohc can finallyenter,Nirvana
and becomo one with Brahma, and
thus end the Cycle of Lives. This
idea of final redemption or hope
is the key to the adhprence and
populanty of Hinduisno.
Th IS theory,- though i n many • ways
a melancholy one, appears to sup-ply
many answers to questions
which the Christian: religions f md
embarrassing. For instance, the
Christian idea of the, possibility of
going to Heaven if one does not
sin during one's life-time is sorely
questioned in the • case of a child
dying immediately after birth. Is
this child not fortunate in that it
fulfills the. requirements for entry
into Heaven since it has not had
anopportunity to sin? Shouldn't:we
k i l i ali children immediately they
are ;born to.assure. them; a certain
passage to Heaven? ;Howunfortu-nate
for the rest of us who have
been allowed to live as long as we
have and thus sin as often as we
have, and thus lessen,our chances.
To the Hindu, however, this child
has only quickly ended one of its
lives in a long stries. Since this
Short life did not prove the child's
true worth one way or another,
presumably it WJ11 be re-born in
another body and be given an op-portunity
to prove it's worth, It
would thus appear that ideas that
appear at first glance to be far-fetched
and unusual, may, on
closer ^examination and sludy an-swer
more questions and be closer
to the truth than our own pet

of metals for which man would
supposedly gladly: sacrifice: a.'limb

Simply because it is rare, pretty
and extremely malleable or work-able.

Did I list rarity? Weil, truth-ful'y,
gold is rare as far as the

is concerned. However, if one were

he would find himself

dreamed of separating this gold

either positive or negativo charges.
Ionites, when placed in watcr, seek
out these ions, entrap them and
remove them from the water.
An oft-used example of this »s a
method'of purifying or softening
water. The minerally "hard" water
flows though a bed of ionites and
emerges free of harmful salts. How-ever,
this isn't the end of the ion­ites,
for they can be cleansed easily
and used indefinitely.
Most exciting to a large number
of peisons is the f act that process-ing
water with ionites is extremely
cheap.

Canada at the Olympics
The seventeenth modern Olympic games are now pver,
and indeed many Canadians will say "thank goodness thafs
ali over with."
The performance of Canada's athletes at these games
was one of the poorest in modern times. Witness our basket-ball
team. They wero eliminated and sent home even before
the Olympics began.
We must not by any means blame the athletes — they
did the best they could under the circumstances. The main
bJame for our poor shovving must be placed on the Canadian
people • themselves.
Canada must adopt a much more realistia attitude to^
wards amateur athletics and physical fitness than has been
shovirn in the past. AI best it -has been a hit and miss affair
with most of our bcttcr athletes receiving their training and
coaching from American universities through athletic scho-larships.
To develop athletes who can compete with best in the
World, (and there is absolutely no doubt that we do have
the potential) we must develop a wide and far reaching
sports participation program, government financed and spon-sored
if it proves^ecessary, with the greatest emphasis
placed on mass participation.-' 1__
Only through mass participation, (quality from quantity)
coupled wilh the best training and coaching facilities, can
weihope to reach the high standards in existence^in many
countries of the World.
Part of the answer is an all-embräcing physical fitness
program for the whole of Canada. Part of the answer is train­ing
high-calibre instructors and providing adequate facilities
— for example, our Iräck and field and swimming facilties
are almost non-oxistent. Parts of the answer is örganizing
international mects in Canada cqvering many qf the Olym­pic
sports events. Part of the answer is reaching the people
of Canada, of creating in them an awareness of the problem.
In this the sports deparlments of our large daily newspapers
could play a loadingrole -— by giving much wider coverage
ho amateur athletics, and in general raising the status of
"amateurismin Canadian athletics. Most of the sports depart-ments
of our daily newspapers are very sneering, deprecating
. and cohdescending in their, attitude towards amateur'sports,
while in every^case they extoll the virtues of professional
sport. There" are" far'grealer returns to be made-from spdrts'
