; ' SiX:«reeks ago I left Toronto on a trip acrpss this'Wonderfdl coun-'
try of ours with an invitation to theyouth of Gänad^ to visit me:
this summer in Moscow. rWelI, not only to visit'me, but also to tal^e' in
the 6th World Youth Festival, along with the öther. thirty thousand
young people who will be here from some one hundred and fifteien
countriesJ^ I was sure that Canadian youth wanted to be friends )With
other young people and that they would.respond favourably to the
idea of'the festival and the trip to Moscow. An optimist! ^yousay
and others will agree; with you and add that the Festival is too far,
away and besides, being in Moscow. the reaction can only be a hostile
one. Weil. I hate to say I told you so or even to conclude that I was::
right — entirely — but|he resuits, as I see them, wouId. indicate thät ^
there is greatinterest in the Festival, in gohig to Moscow and in mak-< >
ing warm friends with the youth of the world. . i
From British Columbia to Port Arthur, in universitles, jräuth <
groups and in discussions with sbme adult organizations I continua^y ^
heard the remark — "Boy, wouId I ever love to go!" or "Gee. I: won- t
der where I can borrovra few hundred doUars". If there was some^
way of recording the remarks as a re^ult of the many radio broad-casts
and interviews about the festival, I am sure that we would be
surprised at the great desire that 'exlsts, among young people; for ^
going to the festival.
Canada has been represented at every World Youth Festival but-not
always by a delegation which reflected the trends among Cänv'
adian youth and their organizations. Everywhere I vi^nt I emphlaslzed f
the necessity for assuring a delegation from Canada that wmgive the'
Soviet youth and the yout^ of the world a complete picture of Canada
and her young people. " <'
' Lefs startwith. British Columbia for example, where I had a -
great deal of discussion witb the leaders of the student organizations •>
on the campus of UBC. From he chairman of NFCUS (National Federation
of Canadian University Students) to the editor of the univers- .
ity paper, ali expressed a desire.to go to the festival. Kathy Archibaldit''
a former Miss Canada and one of the students who went to the Söviet
Union on the World University tour last year, was quite interested i n ,
the idea of getting; a UBC delegation to the festival. She told me
that she had already prepared some material on student lifte at UBC
which she wanted to send to the Soviet^ students for the festival;; It
was a real pleasure to walk along the campus and hear people betiind
you saying — "There's a young fellow who just came back from Mos-cow
and he's talking about a five-week trip to Bussia for $550, and
we're going".
Then there was the meeting with some young people from Vancouver
who had shown a great deal of interest in the festival. Weil,
Ispoke for a while and then showed, the slides I had with meof Mos-cöw
and the Warsaw Festival. Only twenty-three people were there
but the discussion was so involved that it was decided that another
meeting should take place on Sunday morning.' So on Sunday another
Seventeen people attended and only about f our or five of these were
at the meetin'g the previoiis evening.
It.is very encouraging to Jiave a young girl whose ifatheris ä
director pf a big ItiAiber company say — "I want to go. to the festival'
and I want t6 dö sömething'concrete in preparaUon. I'I1 volunteer to

that hf; felt it wasivejry good for-vyoung.people, whether they be;attr v
letes o^, anytbini else, tp get togetheir and'understarid each other/';!' ^.
, Oneafternopnihad a discussion with a,young violinistwho is
very anxious to participate in the.cultural competitions and perhaps •
give a recital in Moscow. Sounds good, eh! ^ r
... Leaving B.C., I was convinced that at least forty could and wouId
come from B.C. Those who had already reglstered induded .^pany :
young people. from the AUUC and FRC, university students; working •
youth and some cultural people. *
Now, f;don't want this to sound like a dry itinerary of a person
who is on a cross-country tour, but thafs what I was doing and'the';
next place I'visitedwas Edmonton.' From Edmonton there, willbe ~ i
wait, eh! We don't know how many delegates from Alberta until
they register (off the record I would say 20—25). but better I should '
teli you what happened while I was in Edmonton and tfalgary. .
Kokt important, I guess, is the publidty we got on ali the radio
stations (news), a fifteen-minute interview on CKUA and a review,of '
the sports program of the festival on TV; with photos that I had
brought with me from Moscow'8 new sports palace. Interviews in the;
papers were encouraging, but when I went into the Office of tlie^ed^
itor of the University of Alberta paper "Gateway" and saw Festival
posters on the wall after just passing one in the administration Office^
l4'ealized that many others thought the festival should be publicized.
When lasked the editor who had put them up he said,"MeV.
Because the festival is being held in the Soviet Union it is natur-al
that Slavic young people, especially Russian and Ukralnian Clan-adiah
youth, should be extremely interested in seeing Moscow and
attending the festival. With this in mind a meeting was organized at
the UkrauJian Centre in Edmonton where the film of the Warsaw
Festival was shown. Of course, they let me say a few words (no more
than an höur) and the enthusiasm among those young people (about
thirty-five of them) really indicated the possibility for a delegation
from Canada' of about 150. If everyone who wanted to go could,
then I'm sure we wouId well match Britain's 2,000.
Then came Calgary and another radio intervlew and I think four
or five delegates (perhaps more). In Calgary there is a l>ranch of the
University of Alberta. Here a.planned me<4ingwith the Student
Christian Movement secretary tumed into a meeting of about thirty-five
young students who listened quite attentively to what I had to
say about the fesival.
Saskatoen and the University of Saskatehewan was the next stop. '
A meeting and festival film showing on the campus and a discussion
w;th the heads^of the political clubs and some other students I am
sure resulted in a number^of delegates from this university city. And
a twenty-two-minute' interview on a fifteen-minute program over
station CKOM should help to popularize this World youth gathering.
Regina.too,: brought resuits. There discussions with Government
leaders as well as other personalities contributed to widenlng out^ the
support for the festival and againgained for the Canadian delegation ,
a number of delegates includtngpossibly a young alderman. s
" It was nice to get off the train in Winnfpeg and hear that ten
had already reglstered-for the Festival. Ckinsidering, the f act that
only three häd been on the '55 delegation from Winnipeg this seemed
to speak well for the work bf the Youth Friendship League in Man-itoba.
But you can't stop at that, and a meeting at United CMlege
as well as discussiohs with other youth leaders convinced us that ;tbis
numl^r could be .doubled. Here the N F L Y and the AUUC are plan-ning
a numberof activities which should result in a Manitoba delegation-
of whicb Manitobians can be very proud.. *
