              Toronto. — Yksi järjestöjemme
vanbitnmista Nestoreista, Karl Leh­to,
loäg: Brahchista, täyttää tämän
kuun 28 p:nä yllämainitun korkean
vuosikymmenen. Merkkipäivän kun­niaksi
olikin suuri sukulaisten, tut­tavien
ja ystävien joukko kerään­tynyt
Don-haalille viettämään hä­nen
kanssaan tuota merkkipäivää.
Kalle piikin narrattu tuona iltana
liikkeelle "kokouksen merkeissä" ja
olikin tilaisuus hänelle aivan täysi
yllätys kaikessa. Yli puoUtoista-sätainen
juhlaväki odotti päivänsan­karia
ravintolahuoneessa katettujen
kahvipöytien,ääressä. Tilaisuudessa,
puhui ensin tunnettu veteraanim­me
J . Latva, muistellen kaikkea
sitä, mitä oli tapahtunut viidenkym­menen
kuuden vuoden aikana, jolla
ajalla Kalle Lehto oli ollut toimin­nassa
mukana erilaisissa tehtävissä.
Myöskin T. Tuori piti pienen pu­heen,
jossa hän mainitsi siitä puo­lesta,
että päivän sankari oli myös­kin
Toronton Yrityksen perustaja
ja näinollen siis tavallan perusta­jana
koko Canadan suomalaiselle
urheiluliikkeelle. Kun vielä liittotoi-iQikunnan
presidentti J. Karvonen
oli lausunut ihuutamia asiaankuu­luvia
sanoja^ saikin asianomainen
tilaisuuden "puolustaa itseään" Vie-la
nytkin reipas ja terveyttä uh­kuva
päivänsankari kiitteli hänelle
osoitetusta huomaavaisuudesta ker-

Meetiitg was held at the Don Hall
Sunday, March 23, 1958 with Henry
Saloranta in the chair. At the re-quest
of the chairman, Jim Tuori
started the-meeting with a short
taik in Finnish eraphasizing the
need for the rejuvination of the
club and the responsibility of its
membership. He commented on
the essential need for the elders
understanding the viewpöint of the
youfh in the club and vice-versa. In
cohcluding his taik, he said the
membership of the sports club must
realize that the effort and not the
prize is what bring the greatest
personal reward,
SECRETARY'S REPÖRT
The secretary's report gave in
summary form a general picture of
the activities of the club. It pointed
out that the activities are varied,
but have been very sporadic during
the past year. Also the report
noted that new activities have been
tried but without success.
Square dancing did not material-ize
as an activity this fall, although
last spring's participation did indi-cate
it appealed tö a.>broad cross
section of the membership.
An attempt was also made to
start a bowling league, but it was
not successful.
FINANCES
The club treasurer Don Pitkänen
gave a brief unofficial report on
the club's finances. He pointed out
that the club was in better finan-cial
shape than it was at this time
last year. The bopks had not been
audited prior to the meeting, so a
complete financial report was not
available.
GYMNASTICS
The participation in gymnastics
Was good- imtil last year's Sports
and Music Festival, but it did not
begin with the same v/gour in the
fall. It was not until organized and
integrated classes for men and
.women on -Sunday mornings were
started last month that things be-gan
to improve.
Classes have been held regularly
on Saturday mornings for children
interested in gymnastijCS. • \ ,
TRACK AND FIELD
Participation in track and field
last year was almost nil. Interest
seemed to be lacking and it was
suggested that the two games per

an effect on track and field
participation.
SOFT BALL
The club had a team in the To­ronto
Softball League in which 18
players participated. We played two
games each week and the team
won six games and lostril2. Still
the team placed third in its loop.
The necessary equipment was pur-chased
by the club and the
players paid for umpire fees, etc.
HOCKEY
The club hockey team did not
make the play-offs this year. The
team won 11 games, lost ten and
tied three. The team itselft was
able to finance new sweaters and
/ocks and the team is continuing
to play in the King Clancy series.
DRAMA
Dramatic activities continuo to
hold interest, but more organized
instruction should be included in
the program.
THE MEMBERSHIP
The total paid and honorary
membership of the club as of the
date of the meeting was 69. This
included 12 children's memberships.
DISCUSSION
A discussion period lollowed the
reports. Briefly, the follovving
points were raised:
1) The new executive was asked
to look into the honorary mem­bership
system and make recom-mendations
to the general mem­bership.
Several members spoke in
favour of the system wlule others
were opposed.
2) The gymnastic courses to start
in April should be coordinated with
a general membership drive.
3) The summer program at Tar-mola
should be planned in ad-vance
and the necessary equipment
be set up at the camp before the
seäson begins.
4) The executive of the club
should work towards establishing
a continuity. iff the club*s program
of activities.
5) In discussing matters of pro-perty
and facilities it is necessary
to regard the athletic club and
Finnish Society as organizations
working closely together, because
they share the same premises and
facilities. Club members should
keep this in mind in our relations
with the Finnish Society.
6) Part of the responsibility for
mediocre attendance at Tarmola is
that it has become more of a place
of work than relaxation and recre-ation.
It seems very contradictory
that organizations professing to be
progressive are so backward in
applying the use of machinery in
its own activties. It is unfortunate
for instance, that no equipment
(tractor, power saw, etc.) has been
purchased for Tarmola when eco-nomically
it would-have been more
practical and members would be
relieved of l)ack breaking chores
and indeed, freed for other pro-jects.
7) Membership in the club should
mean paid membership.
8) The club shares an equal
responsibility in maintaining the
good condition of Tarmola and in
particular those areas which are the
direct responsibility of the club.
NOMINATIONS AND EtECTIONS
Before the nominations wefe
opened Mr. Enok Löppönen defi-ned
the rseponsibility of the club
chairman.
It was moved, seconded and'car-riedthat
ö\e executive commifttee
elected at this meeting would be
made up of a chairman and four
members, and in f act this commit-tee
would be charged with the res­ponsibility
of reorgzmizing the acti­vities
and administration of the
club.
The following executive commit-tee
was acclaimed: Jim Tuori, chair;
man, D. Pitkänen, A. Illbury, A .
Hunnakko and W. D. Bohm.
The executive committee may be
increased to the constitution requi-rements
at any time when and if
required during the year.
NEW BUSINESS
The gymnastic course beginning
next month was discussed. Two
members were elected to the pre-paration
committee to make the
necessary preparations for the

Assist Youth Activities
Toronto. — It has been announ-ced
by the national executives of
both the Finnish- Canadian Ama-teur
Sport Federation and the Fin­nish
Organization of Canada that
youth courses are again being spon-sored
this year. In announcing the
courses; it has been emphasized
that it is a joint undertaking to
help strengthen youth activities in
both organizations.
The courses will agäin centre
around gym and athletic instruc­tion
with a few short lectures on
necessarry organizational aspects,
which are vital to the proper
functioning of clubs.

Unto Penttinen from the Jehu
Club, who has been very active in
his own- club and especially in
cross-country skiing, has been
chosen as the instructor. It has
been emphasized that although
Unto will be visiting ali the active
centres for a period of about two
weeks, local instruction will also
be necessary to provide a variety
of activities during the courses.
The courses wUl also be utilized
to teach the mass gym routine
which will be a central part of the
big festival in Port Arthur next
summer.
Every centre is urged to begin
preparing for the courses immed-iately
and to arrange as much time
as possible for instruction during
the two week period he will be in
each locality, It should also be
noted that the courses in each
centre will be concluded with a
cohcert to help defray costs. The
committees should also make pre­parations
in advance for the con-cert,
SO. that the courses will not
become a generat rehearsal for the
concert and nothing more.
The important thing is to get
preparations under way immed-iately,
so that ali centres will get
as much benefit as possible from
the coursf!s. The presient schedule
calls for, Unto visiting the main
centres in the following order:
Sault Ste. Marie: April Ist. to
April 13th.

Toronto: April 28th to May l l t h.
Timmins- South Porcuplne: May
13lh to May 25th.
Port Arthur. May 28th to June

The joint statement of the two
national organizations also explaina
that if other localities. not listed
in the above schedule would like to
take advantage of the courses they
should immediately write to their
national Secretary so that the ne­cessary
arrangements can bc made.

Sivuliikkeiden kokouksia oli
pidetty edellä kuluneen viikon ajal­la
Geraldtonissa, Kaministiquassa,
Intolassa ja Fort Williamissa, joista
raportit ja esitykset tuotiin tähän
lopulliseen kokoukseen.
Kokouksen laillisuus ja työjärjes­tys
hyväksyttiin liikkeen presiden­tin
S. Fukkalan esityksestä. Hänet
myös valittiin kokouksen puheen­johtajaksi.
Kokouksen pöytäkirju-rlksi
valittiin A. Vesterback, kielen­kääntäjäksi
A. Widgren, puheenvuo-i-
öjen" merkitsijäksi Lyyli TÖikko,
sanomalehdille raporteeraajaksi A.
T. Hill ja ponsikomiteaan G. Cotter,
H. Espeland ja I. Seppälä.
Liikkeen tilikertomukset ja tilin­tarkastajain
lausunnot esitti kirjan­pitäjä
A. Vesterback. Tilikertomuk-sista
ilmeni että liikevaihto oli l i ­sääntynyt
kuluneella vuodella yli
13 Vi prosenttia verrattuna samaan
aikaan- viime vuonna ja liikkeen
puhdas voitto oli $4,700.00 kun kaik­ki
varaukset ja " poistot oli suori­tettu.
Viime vuoden ajalla oli tehty eri
liikkeissä korjauksia ja uudistuksia,
öljylämmityslaitteet oli ostettu Ka-ministiquan
ja Port Arthurin kaup­parakennuksiin.
Samoin oli johto­kunta
ostanut lotin 184 S. Algoma-kadun
varrelta, tulevaisuuden auto-parkkaamista
silmällä pitäen. Sen
hinta oli $6,000.00. Näihin tarkoituk­siin
oli johtokunta hankkinut lisää
rahaa lainaamalla yksityisiltä hen­kilöiltä.

Yleisliikkeenhoitaja F. Parnega
esitti liikkeenhoitajan ja johtokun­nan
raportit!, jossa todetaan, että
"liikkeenvaihdon nousu oli yleistä,
mutta kuitenkin oli ollut suhteel­lisesti
suurempi Geraldtonin j a Ka-ministiquan
kaupoissa kuin Port
Arthurissa ja Fort Williamissa.
Vaikkakin nykyinen työttömyyden
lisääntyminen jo alkoi viime syksy­nä,
ei se huomattavasti vaikuttanut
meidän myynteihin tällä ajialla. Me
olemme asettaneet päämääräksi %
miljoonan myyntien saavuttamisen
tänä vuonna, "sanoi hän, "ja kaikki
merkit viittaavat siihen että me saa­vutamme
sen."
Viime puolivuosikokouksessa kes­kusteltiin
ostopalautuksien maksus­ta
ostajakuntien kesken ja ilmoitet­tiin,
että tulisi säilyttää ostoliput
heinäkuun 1 päivästä joulukuun lop­puun
1957, täi*koituksellä ostopälati-tuksien
saamien. Tänään johtokunta
esittää, että me maksamme nämä
ostopalautukset. Kaikki liikkeenhoi­tajamme
ovat hyvin innostuneita tä­män
esityksen johdosta, sillä heistä
tuntuu että se auttaa liikkeenvaih­don
kohottamisessa ja se osoittaa
meidän ostajillemme että he hyöty­vät
säästöistään meidän osuusliik­keessämme",
sanottiin rs^ortissa.
Raporttien johdosta keskustelussa
ilmaistiin, että International osuus­liike
on voittanut uusien ketjuliikr
keiden tuomat viekottelut ja nar-raustoimenpiteet.
Työttömyys mei­dän
liikkeessämme lujittaa yhteen­kuuluvaisuuden
voimaa. Meidän
liikkeemme on työläisten ja farma­rien
joukkoliikettä ja talouspulan
uhkaava ilmeneminen lujittaa luot­tamista
osuustoiminnan etuihin ja
mahdollisuuksiin.
Vuosikokous päätti yksimielisesti,
että maksetaan yksi prosentti (1%)
ostoyalautuksia ostoksille heinä­kuun
ja joulukuun väliseltä ajalta,
1957.
Myöskin päätettiin järjestää las­ten
kesäleiri ensi kesänä kuten on
tehty aikaisemminkin ja valittiin

Wefewne to tlie Festival
Easter is almost here and that means that we in Sudbury. will
soon be^hosts to the annual drama festival ^ n s o r e d by the Fiimish
Organization of Canada. As readers vrill recall, the festival will be
held here-in Sudbury over the Easter weekend, April 5th and 6th.
Plans also caD for a gala welcoming dance on the evening of April
4th, v?hJGh is Good Friday. ,
A number of changes were made m the Drama Festival and
this year adult groups have also been invited to partkipate and
perhaps because of this change, things really look good at this stage.
Ten one-act plays have aiready been entered; whiclt is much more
than at any previous festival.
As a matter of fact the Sudbury grou|>s have decided to hold
a local elimination a week before the festival, because four plays
have been entered from Sudbury. On the basis of the elimination
performances, two plays will be entered in the festival from Sudbury..
D6spite the fact that this year the Drama Festival is not limited
to only young people, we note in the entries that the yqunger gene-ration
wi]l be very vreH represented.
From Information we have received thus far the Beaver Lake
Jehu group will be represented for the first time in the Drama Festi­val.
They will be presenting a play by the name of ''Kaunis mylly-l>'
ttö" under the direction of (Mari Johnson.
Sault Ste. Alarie vrill agatn be participating after an absence of
a few years. They have chosen a Finnish play called "Suursiivous"
and it is being directed by Alma Merisalo.
The St. Catharines Star drama group is also making the long
trip from the south ali the way to Sudbury. We recall that they were
entered in the festival a number of years ago in Toronto. They have
chosen "Pirun kelkassa' and U . Harju is the director.
Toronto has an imposing list of entries with. three differfipt
groups ente/ing plays. The Toronto Youth Drama Club has picked
an English play by Anton Chekhov. The name of the play is " A
Marriage Proposal" and Henry Huhtanen is re^nsible for the
directing.
The Yritys group has also chosen an English play "Protest" and
Wilbert Bohm is directing the production. Both these plays feature '
youthful casts.
The third play from Toronto is being entered by the Finnish
Organization Drama Club and it is the Finnish play "Viimeinen leu­to"
directed by Paula Woodley.
It is still not known what plays will be entered from Sudbury
because there will be time to present only t>vo of the four plays that
have been produced for the festival. ' -
Under the direction of Helen Grenon the Alerts group is present­ing
"'Prinssi Sulevi ja prinsessa Heljä". This play has a very youthful
east.
The other three plays are being produced by the Drama Club of
the Finnish Organization and they include the following: "Kahleh­dittu
nuoruus" directed by Aino Lahti; "Kihlaus" directed by Irja
Koivula; and "Vanha talo" directed by A. "Kääriäinen.
Ht will be a very busy weekend because four plays will be
shown each day. That has never happened before in eariier festivals.
The order the plays will be shown has not been determined yet; bjit
it will be annonced as soon as possible. It seems likely that ibe
Sunday productions will begin at 1.30 P. M . to make it possible |or
local farmeretö enjoy the festival.
'We would like to remind you that much of the competition has
been removed from festival and the John Salo trophy for the best
play will not be up for competition this year. Two awards will be
presented, but they w l l be to the best actor and actress.
We certainly hope that the fest.val v.ill attract a lot of young
people to Sudbury including young people who are not actually
participating in the Drama Festival. We will certainly do our best
to make your visit an enjoyable one.

osuusliikkeemme kanta rau­han
puolesta, ydinaseiden kokeilu­jen
lopettamisesta ja vaatien valto­jen
neuvottelujen pitämistä nyt he-tL
Myöskin, koska työttömyys on
hetken pääpulma, korostettiin, että
meidän maamme tulisi avata kaup­pasuhteet
kaikkien maiden j a kaik­kien
kansojen kanssa, tehdä kaik­kensa
poistaakseen taloudellista la­maannusta
aiheuttavat syyt ja vara­ta
työtä kaikille. Päätettim johto­kunta
valtuuttaa saattamaan nämä
kysymykset maaliskuun 31 p:n vaa­leissa
valitun uuden hallituksen tie­toon.
— Lähsicanadalainen mustahan-täinen
tai muulipeura, on paina­vampi
kuin suurilukuisempi valko-häntäinen
rotu.
— British Columbian mineraali­tuotanto
nousi $175,000,000:im v.
