Neuvostoliiton ensimmäiset
olympialaiskatsastuksot. Mukana oli
parhaimmisto niitä lukuunotamat-ta,
jotka olivat kilpailumatkalla
Varsovassa ja Tukholmassa. ^
Suurinta huoniiota herätti kilpai­lujen
ensimmäisenä päivänä ukrai­nalaisten
pituushyppääjä Ter-Ova-nesjan,
joka kilpaili ensiVnmäistä
kertaa talvisen hiihdossa:saadun-lir
hasrevehtymän jälkeen. Hän sai
onnistumaan vain ensimmäi.sen ja
neljännen yrityksensä, jotka kan­toivat
7 87 ja 7.84. Muut hyppynsä,
joista ainakin kolmas: kantoi noin
8 metriä, hän astui hieman y l i.

FESTIVALS /
Very soon, many of us will be in that wonderful hectic
whirl, that ends with the final note of the Suurjuhla Sun-day,
July 31, 1960, in Timmins.
Anyone, who has taken part in the program, competitions,
or the organization of this great festival, admits that it is
an uforgettable experience. Mind you, some knock themselves
out in this activity, but usuallytheybounceback into form,
especially for the "next" festival.
There is something special about a festival such as ours,
;where: the; carpenters,: miners,; tailorsy.h
secretaries, plumbers, labourers, the working "stiffs" who
make up, who -ARE our organizations come together to sing;
compete,make music; idemonstrate,or just watch and listen.
It would be very easy to go overboard in describing the
excitement, beauties and emotional feelings caused by the
Suurjuhla. We take part in the festival because we,know
we will have a ball, we will see old friends^a
to takepart in the, athletic competitions, or for any number
and,combination of personal reasons: Some of us migh
be a little sour just before the festival, but we keep on going.
It is peculiar how the Suurjuhla takes hold of us. But
didyou ever ask yourself;-— why have festivals? —^
benefitour organizations orourselves?. Are they:sec
— apart from the main stream of life in Canada? — Are they
worth the effort?
To answer the question "should we have festivals?," we
will have to look at the other questions first.
What about benefits to the organizations? There are
many, but lefs look at just a few. First, any organization
must have a program of activities in order to live, and you
sure get activity around a föstival. Perhaps this is ratio-nalizing
a bit too much, so look at the type of activity a
festival stimulates. The best known is perhaps the choirs of
the different locals of the'Finnish Organization. These choirs
'are very good choirs and highly respected in and outside
their local communities. If there were no festivals tow^rds
vvhich these choirs worked, it is very doubtful that they
would have reached their present high standards.
Secondly, the sports program of the Suurjuhla is v^^hal;
many learned men in Canada have been calling for —
"Sports Participation by the Masses." The occasional cham-pion
cames from the ranks of the ^.C.A.S.F. but the im-portant
and significant character of their program is that
everyone should participate. The evils of professional and
pseudo-amateur sports which have been revealed lately can
never seep into the F.C.A.S.F. while this remains their po-licy.
And here again the festival is the high point of the year.
This is their olympics,where the machini
the salesman in exciting competive sports.
Another organizational benefit is that this is the one
time each year that the membership of the different local
organizations get together. It helps us realize that united,
we represent a signifigant part of the social, economic and
cultural life of Canada.
Before we go further, it would be a good thing to re-mind
ourselves that our organizations, the F.O. of C. and the
F.C.A.S.F., have been given life by working folk to' equip
themselves"'with the means to work for a better life and
provide themselves withfacilities for cultural Rctivities;^
— who is more entitled to the spiritual richness of these
activities than those, whose toil creates the economic-social
conditions where it is possible for human time and energy
to go towards cultural development.

Personal benefits from festivals are also numerous. Par-ticipatioh"
in athletic activities is the most apparent, but the
same benefits come from ali of the activities stimulated by
the festival. The Suurjuhla reflects the richness of our or-ganizatiorls
life, andjn a very personal sense, brings out the
best in each-one of us. '
Our festival is not sectarian, nor apart from life in Can­ada.
Our activities and our Suurjuhla are as Canadian as the -
maple leaf.' We vvould^be poor citizens if we allowed our
cultural heritage to stagnate. Canada needs the type of acti­vities
sponsored by our organizations. It.v^^quld be a-grim*
loss to Canada if -the cultural traditipns of the many racial
origins which make up our country, were allowed'to die.
Are the festivals worth the effort? The -vyork required
to produce a festival is great,— but considering the~results,-
• it seems well worth the effort. Whether you are washing
dishes, competing in track & field, singing, looking after
billets, or any task associated with the festival, remember
each contribution is' equally important. Thei'e can be no
"class" distinction in a Suurjuhla.

The Midsummer Nighfs bonfire
kept burning tili midnight and
longer is the expression of man's
ardent desire for light. In'Sges
past the flames' were believed ,to
drive away the -evil spirits which
forced the sun to ^et causing, the
World to darken and turn to Winter.
To music — often the singing of
those who watch and dance — the
Old folk dances would be revived.
If this fails, the old-fashioned
polkas, waltzes etc, are the most
popular.
A bit of mystery touches the
merry making, for the giri bäthing
her face in the dew as the mid­summer
sun rises requires no fur­ther

The young man wishing to see
the face of his future.. fiancee

Seven to nine species of.:flow€rs
are collected by the homeward
bound girls. With the flo\yers be-neath
her pilIow, the man a youiig
lady dreams of this night, is the
one she will wed. ^
The sun's ascent, in the northern
latitiides is not much above the
horizon, but it is seen for a longer
time. Even in Helsinki the Mid­summer
Night is very l i ^ t , with
the sun setting only "a few inches"
beneath the horizon. Further north
it does not completely dip below
the horizon for some days, but is
seen moving east to west=along 'the
horizon.
Each year the Finnish people
and their descendants celebrate
Midsummer Eve in almost every
Canadian city. It may not be the
same as in Finland, but those who
come to participate in this joyous
event generally return home satis-fied
with the.evening.
A member group of the FCASF
Isku A. C. is sponsoring the cele-brations
in the form of a dance at
the outdoor pavilion of the Isku
Park on June 24th.
The music will be provided^ by
a well known Lakehead orchestrar
Harry Siczcar's. -
