Back From Moscöw .M
, , Weil, we're back on the job again after taldng it easy for*,
most of the month of August. We got our vacations in Augusti;
foUövving the big festival and, needless to say, we really*
enjoyed them. Then we got an unexpected extension to our
vacations by being tfundled off to the hospital for a iew',
days. But that is ali over now and we're happy to be back.'.

It seems many things have happened while we were away ;

thing that is really noticeable here in Sudbury is the fact that

According to the Penttinens the festival actually started
once they crosse^ into the Peoples' Democracies because
there was a big welcome arranged at every station. It seems
that the whole town would turn out to meet the Special fes­tival
trains.
A keen sportsman, Unto was particularly Interested in
the international sports meet and the Friendly Games which
were held in conjunction with the festival. Leadingworld
athletes competedinTthe international meet whichwas of
Olympic calibre and the Friendly Games were open to others
under champlonship class. • Unto. will undoubtedly teli us
more about these competitions.
The Penttinens were quite moved when they ran into
some old friends in Moscow. They were very pleased to meet
Hilja and Otto Kratz who went to the Soviet Union about 25
years ago fromiBeaver Lake and they alsomet Martin Parker,
a former editor of the Vapaus, who was deported 'during the
Hungry 30's because he had a very courageous habit of writ-ing
about that which was in the interests of the ordinary
Vorking man.
On the way home they were able to arrange for a two-week
visit. in Finland and they were quite impressed by
their brief visit,
But, as we spid to start with, we have no intention of
telling you everything the Penttinens told us, because they
promised to teli you first hand.
Our'readers in the west will also have an opportunlty to
hear al?0ut the festival because the west was weU repre-sented.
Osmo Lahti of Nanaimo was the official delegate of
the Finnish Organization of Canada and we win no doubt
be hearing more from him. In addition to him Frances Söder­holm
of Wel>ster's Comers and Esa Kuusisto 'of Vancouver
made the trip to the festival on their own an4 they will be
talklng about noihing^but'the ic^tivai for the next few week5
so their friends too will be well informed.
