Mind you, we d i d our best to wtn,'but so d i d thejothers. More than l i k e l y the next festival vviil be held i n Sudbury next Easter and we-intend putting our best foot forward and t h e r e i s every reason to believe that we w i l l be able to get the trophy back to admue foranother year. Butthere is lots of time to write about that: This time we feel we should conduct.a post-mortem on the festival held läst •Week-end and we would certainly l i k e others to send i n their opinions. Naturally, some who followed the plays,may havedifferent opinions ^ abput the :matter, but we realize that the adjudicator Len H j o r t h had a difficult job to do and judging from- the response of the audience, the majority agreed with him. " ' • ' We,were also very impressed by M r . Hjorth's brief remarks prior to the presentation of trophies.' He quite porrectly emphasized thai the main reason young' people p a r t i c i p a t e j n the Drama festival and in the dramatic activities around the halls iäliot becau$:e of the troohies at stake, but because the FinnishrCanadian generation has learned to appreciate drama and is anxious-to participate ^and to taise the level of our stage work. And the young^people are in an excellent position to really raise the level of our prbductions, because they can get assistance frora English speaking groups and government agencies vvhich have been out of the reach of the older generation because of the language barrier. The Toronto Youth Drama Club has shown a great deal of initiative i n this respect. . Now for a fcw words on the actual productions. Ws have continuously advocated that competing groups should select well written serious dramatic plays or old Finnish folk plays because they have the. greateät audience appeal and they offer greater possibilitles for actors and directors alike. The fact that the "Invaliidit", a serious.drama, w a s p i c k e d as the best play and certainly received the ^reatest applause f r om the audience, seems to be the best emphasis of this point. y The main responsibility of the play was i n the hands of a very capable newco^er to the Toronto stage,- Ritva Kori^ who managed her difficult part. very well. Deservingly she was given the best actress award. The leading male award was presented to L e n Boström who had a somewhat shorter part i n the same play, but who nevertheless, had to b e o n stage most of the time. Lennie had a tougb element to cope with, because he had to act the opposite of his usually cheerful self. [ He had the part of an old man who had one foot i n the: grave. And a convincing perfomance Lennie gave. Even the best supporting actor award went to a member of the same east. - This honor was given to Taisto Savela f o r . h i s -.convincing performance of a soldier who had l o s t both arms m battle and: had become mentally deranged because of his sufferings. A number of other capable young people teamed up to'make the play the success it was. Thora N e i l was the director for this production which was put on by the Y r i t y s Athletic Club. ' The only other play to get in on the awardswas the production of the Alerts Athletjc Club "Merkkimies" directed by Helfen Grenon. Seija Casey i n a Short character role was given the best supporting actress award. Despite the fact that the other two plays "Saraa vanha j u t t u " and "Dark Brown" did not get i n on the "spoils", it does not mean that they were not successful performances. Not i n the least; It was a very difficult job for the adjudicator to pick the winners and he paid tribute to ali those participating.
