The Drama Festival
We're hack again pounding ,our old Un4erwood after a pleasant
although brlef, ivisit to Toronto where the Youth Drama Festival of the
F i n n i s h Oorganizätion of Canada was held last Sunday. -
Yes, and we are yeqy happy about the way Ihings went, althougK
Sudbury was forced to relinquish- the. beautiful John Salo trophy.tö
the Yritys group, w h i c h p u t on the win'ning play "InvaliiditV. Mind
you, we d i d our best to wtn,'but so d i d thejothers.
More than l i k e l y the next festival vviil be held i n Sudbury next
Easter and we-intend putting our best foot forward and t h e r e i s every
reason to believe that we w i l l be able to get the trophy back to admue
foranother year. Butthere is lots of time to write about that: This time
we feel we should conduct.a post-mortem on the festival held läst •Week-end
and we would certainly l i k e others to send i n their opinions.
Naturally, some who followed the plays, may havedifferent opinions
^ abput the :matter, but we realize that the adjudicator Len H j o r t h had a
difficult job to do and judging from- the response of the audience, the
majority agreed with him. " ' • '
We,were also very impressed by M r . Hjorth's brief remarks prior
to the presentation of trophies.' He quite porrectly emphasized thai
the main reason young' people p a r t i c i p a t e j n the Drama festival and in
the dramatic activities around the halls iäliot becau$:e of the troohies
at stake, but because the FinnishrCanadian generation has learned to
appreciate drama and is anxious-to participate ^and to taise the level of
our stage work.
And the young^people are in an excellent position to really raise the
level of our prbductions, because they can get assistance frora English
speaking groups and government agencies vvhich have been out of the
reach of the older generation because of the language barrier. The
Toronto Youth Drama Club has shown a great deal of initiative i n this
respect. .
Now for a fcw words on the actual productions. Ws have continuously
advocated that competing groups should select well written serious
dramatic plays or old Finnish folk plays because they have the. greateät
audience appeal and they offer greater possibilitles for actors and
directors alike.
The fact that the "Invaliidit", a serious.drama, w a s p i c k e d as the
best play and certainly received the ^reatest applause f r om the audience,
seems to be the best emphasis of this point. y
The main responsibility of the play was i n the hands of a very
capable newco^er to the Toronto stage,- Ritva Kori^ who managed her
difficult part. very well. Deservingly she was given the best actress
award.
The leading male award was presented to L e n Boström who had a
somewhat shorter part i n the same play, but who nevertheless, had to
b e o n stage most of the time. Lennie had a tougb element to cope with,
because he had to act the opposite of his usually cheerful self.
[ He had the part of an old man who had one foot i n the: grave. And
a convincing perfomance Lennie gave.
Even the best supporting actor award went to a member of the
same east. - This honor was given to Taisto Savela f o r . h i s -.convincing
performance of a soldier who had l o s t both arms m battle and: had
become mentally deranged because of his sufferings.
A number of other capable young people teamed up to'make the play
the success it was. Thora N e i l was the director for this production which
was put on by the Y r i t y s Athletic Club. '
The only other play to get in on the awardswas the production of
the Alerts Athletjc Club "Merkkimies" directed by Helfen Grenon. Seija
Casey i n a Short character role was given the best supporting actress
award.
Despite the fact that the other two plays "Saraa vanha j u t t u " and
"Dark Brown" did not get i n on the "spoils", it does not mean that they
were not successful performances. Not i n the least; It was a very
difficult job for the adjudicator to pick the winners and he paid tribute
to ali those participating.
Now the main thing is to r o l l up our sleeves and start preparing
for the next festival to make sure that there w i l l be a record number of
plays entered and that the quality w i l l continuo to rise.
