The responsibility of arranging
the meet was given to the Alerts
Athlelic Club at the annual fede­ration
meeting last summer. The
matter was raore or less overlooked,
. becausie ,there has been a notable
laek of skiers in the club over the
past fäw years, then ali of a suddeti
a few w!Beks ago we realized we bad
to get cracking.
The events to be run-off at the^
meet were published in last Tues
day's pai)er and we hope eVerybody
has seen it. If you haven't, dig up
the paper and have a look. 1*6
program, of coörse, indudes ali the
champiqnship events that have been
on the program for a, number of
years and a few additionar events
for young skiers.
We would iike to point out that
the ineet is open to ali skiers hav
Jng a CASA racing card and regular
prizes will be awarded the first
three in each event, but the cham-pionship
medals and trophies will
be given to members of the fede­ration.
Nöt many years ago the Alerts
club was able to hold meets at
Trout Lake in Lockerby, but the
area has become so built-up and
criss-crossed with roads that it is
impossible to lay out a proper track
anymore. For that reason the club
has.arranged with the Jehu club at

The Jehii club has one of the finest
tracks in Northern Ontario, so we
are sure that nobody will be sorry
about the arrangement.
Meets held so far in the Sudbury
district indicate that there will be
some new names at the head of the
winner's roster. Such past fed^
ration stalwarts as Karl Palomäki,
Antti Ranta and Karl Krats are
really going to get up and go, if
theyexpect to add some more shiny
stuff to their enviable coUections.
That is the feeling of ski enthusiasts
here.
Predictions also have it that the
Jehu Club will take just about
every championship medal this
year. For many years they haye
managed to take a very large share
of the medals and the prediction
is that they wiU take even a biggor
share this year. That is. if other
clubs don't decide to do something
about it and fast. ^
On" Saturday, February Ist only
the 10 kilometer events will be
decid^.d for the men's open, under
21 and veterans. These results will
also determine which club wins the
team trophy based on the times of
the three best club skiers. The
races Saturday will start at three
o'clock.
. Suhday, the races will start- sharp
at 11 in the moming and continue
until ali the races have been dec­ided.
The Alerts is prolMibly one of the
few ski clubs left without a single
actlve skier, but despite that im-portant
fact, we will still try to
promote skiing to the best of our.
ability. . We hope that local sports
ienthusiästs will also help by turn
ing out in large numbers for this
impoiiant meet

Things Ipoked much better lastjweek than they hav6 for
quite some time. We were very^leased to feceive and
publish two articles regarding activities in Toronto and North
Branch. We found both articles to be very interesfing and
are hopmg that ali clubs will begin reporting regularly.
The main reason we enjoyed reading those articles was
because they indicated that the youth are doing something
in those centres. When we don't get correspondenqe for
months and months'we begin to wonder whether there is
anything going on anywhere and vfQ imagine others begin
to wonder also.
Perhaps, none of the centres have been doing anything
really startlilig, but we are-sure that readers would like
to hear about whatever is going on. This is generally the
buSiest time of the year, sp we are certainly loöking forward
to more correspondence.
What can you write about? We would certainly like
to hear how the Yritys hockey t6am is doing. We would
like to hear from Isku regarding next summer's combined
sports and music festival. We would likte to hear about
skiing activities from ali the northern clubs and we would
like to hear about ali phases of activities.
A fe;v weeks ago we mentioned the Drama Festival in
our column and reminded that the festival will be held on
April 5th and 6th. Since then we have received more Infor­mation
on the festival and would like to pass it on.
Firstly, ali participating groups must send their entry
to the national of f ice, 957 Broadview Ave., Toronto 6, Ont.,
by the last day of February.
When you think about it, it really isn't far away, be­cause
by that d.ate the groups should have settled on the
selection of the plays and the casts, That means that the
festival plays must be given immediate attention. There
are many good one-act plays in the national of f ice and they
are available to ali. So, lefs start looking them over.
This year the festival will be non-competitive in that no
winning play will be chosen as has been the custom in the
past. Also ädult groups are invited to participate. The only
competition involved will be for the best actress and actor
awards and they will be decided on the basis of audience
reaction. In other words, members of the audience will be
given the oppprtunity to participate in the selection of the
best actress or actor and no adjudicators will have to go out
on the limb.
Those are really the only changes made in the festival.
But with adult groups invited to participate, there should
be many more groups participating than has been the habit
in the past. In Sudbury alone, plans call for four plays alto-gether
and a special elimination bout will be held a week
before the festival to permit only the best ones to enter.
Toronto has always had a number of entries in the festi­val
so we imagine they v^ill be ströngly represented again
this year^ We also hope that Port Arthur and some of the
smaller centres will be present when the festival is held in
Sudbury over the Easter week-end.
Th Drama Festivals have been extremely popular in the
past and v^^e are sure that they will continue to be popular,
because drama is one of the most popular forms of cultural
activity carried on within the Finnish community.
But the success of the festival depends on us and there
is no time to lose, so lefs start making preparations right
away.

komitealle, aiotaan polttaa sine­töidyssä
kuoressa, päätti Bang Jen­senin
tapausta sei vi ttämäärl asetettu
TK:n kolmen miehen valiokunta
keskiviikkona. ,
Pääsihteeri Hammarskjöld erotti
tämän tanskalaisen " sihteeristöön
kuuluvan virkamiehen, hänen kiel-täydyttyään
luovuttamasta unkari­laisten
luetteloa, jonka hän oli laa­tinut
työskennellessään YK:n Un­karin-
valiokunnassa. Hän ilmoitti,
ettei hän voinut luovuttaa tätä luet­teloa,
koska hän "ei enää olisi voi­nut
estää sen joutumista vääriin
käsiin." ^ ,
Kolmen miehen valiokunta kir­joittaa
pääsihteerille lähettämäs­sään
raportissa, että Bang-Jensenin
hallussa oleville papereille "ei pi­täisi
antaa mitään todistusarvoa",
koska Bang-Jensen eiij>llut käsitel­lyt
näitä papereita niinkuin salaisia
asiakirjoja olisi käsiteltävä. Hän oli
tunnustanut^uljettaneensa paperei-

for nine and a half days an
operation for appendicitis. I finally
got around to writing.

from you. I had a lovely Christmas
this year and Neyir Years was the
same. I hope you enjoyed yourself
at Christmas and New Years too.
I just got home from \vork at
9:30 tonight. I work in a store a
few blocks from jny place. My mot-he

Judy Ls Looking Forward
To the Music Festival
Dear Setä,
Thank you very much for the
Christmas present. I got a lot of
presents. My favorites are a teen-age
girl doll and "Clue" game.
My birthday is on January 29 and
I v/ill be 9. My Giamma already
gave me my present, a pair of
figiire skates so I can use them be­fore
the ice melts. My little sister
got new skates too.
My aunt and uncle are supposed
to come back from Florida today.
We minded their dog while they
were away. .
We have a baby budgie bird. It
is grefen and it is 4 weeks old. Her
name is Dixie. She answers when
Ispeaktoher.
This year I'm going to be in
the music festivals too. My pieces
are Les Sirenes and Tumbling
CIowns. Vm also in the Junior Band.
We played at the hali on New Years
Eve on- the program and for the
dancing. I had so much f un there
^aricing with my girlfriend.
I hope ali the children are having
Winter fun. We haYen't had snow
to play in but y/e have skated a
lot.

Shirley Has Many
Different A-ctivities
Dear Setä,
Thank-you for the wonderful
stamp book I received. I enjoyed
it very much. Tm sorry I haven*t
writen for such a long time, but
Tve been quite busy.
The reason Tve been so busy is
because I have more homework
now that Tm in grade eight. Tve
also joined several clubs and I
practice my accordion a lot more
thanl used to.
One of the clubs I belong to is
the 4H club. Our clubis called the
Grantham Willing Wpol Workers,
because this unit has to do with
woo.l. We are making skirts. Be-sides
this, each girl is her own
Secretary. Sh^ writes down the n^-
nutes of each meeting and i-ecöpies
them into her record bbook. Each
February ali of the 4-H clubs in
Lincoln. County meet at' a certain
place and everybody brings their
skirts and record books to- be jud-ged.
The other club I belong tp is the
Junior Pioneers. It is a wonderful
organization and I am proud to be­long
to it. We meet every Friday
night from eight until eleven. There
are fifty-two members, twenty-six
girls and twenty-six boys. We are
taught mäinly square däncing. We
sometime put on shows for the pa-rents.
Some of the other activities
we are taught are ball-room dan­cing,
horseback riding, archery,

Haloo tytöt ja pojat!
Kuluvan viikon aikana saapui
kaikkiaan viisi kirjettä, joista kii­tos
Lena, Shirley, Judy, Eva ja
Charles. Olisikin mainiota, jos joka
viikko olisi niin monta kirjettä.
Koettakaahan nyt olla ahkerana, et­tä
lukemista on riittävästi tässä
meidän osastossamme ja kehoitta-kaa
ystäviänne myös kirjoittamaan.
Täällä Sudburyssa on nyt vihdoin
sen verran lunta, että hiihtäjät
pääsevät ladulle ja tietysti se mer­kitsee,
että on^yös hiihtokilpailu­ja,
missä hiihtäjät voivat koettaa
kuntoisuuttaan. Täällä on jo ollut
useita kilpailuja ja Beaver Laken
Jehun nuoret hiihtäjät, tytöt ja po­jat
ovat pärjänneet mainiosti. Aina
kun katsoo lasten kilpailujen tulok<
sia, näkee Jehun hiihtäjien nimiä
kärkipaikoilla. Se onkin mainiota,
sillä hiihto on hauskaa ja terveellis­tä
urheilua.
Hiihtokilpailuja seuratessaan Se­tä
on monena vuotena' innostunut
niin kovasti, että on vähältä hank­kinut
itselleen sukset, että pääsee
mukaan, mutta ei niitä suksia ole
vieläkään hankittu. Ehkä Setä pel­kää
kaatumista eikä sen vuoksi ole
ostanut suksia.
Setä tykkäisi kuulla minkälaista
lasten toimintaa on käynnissä To­rontossa,
Vancouverissa, Port Art­hurissa
ja muilla paikkakunnilla,
sillä kirjeenvaihtajat eivät ole sii­tä
maininneet mitään pitkään ai­kaan.
Täällä Sudburyssa on vilkas
lasten toiminta käynnissä ja lapsil­le
on paljon hauskaa suomen kie­len
koulussa ja myös Alertsin voi­misteluharjoituksissa.
Lapsilla on
nimittäin jo mielessä, että ensi ke­sän
I suuret voimistelu-, urheilu ja
musiikkijuhlat pidetään Port Art­hurissa
ja sinne olisi kaikkien

pääministeri Duplessis väitti täällä
viime torstaina, että CPR käyttää
parhaat rautatien matkustajavau­nunsa
Ontariossa ja "mikä jää jä-lelle
se käytetään Quebecissa."
Hän teki lausuntonsa kun lainlaa-tijakunnan
yksityisten lakiehdotus­ten
valiokunnassa rautatieyhtiön
edustaja pyysi, että siirrettäisiin
tammikuun 28 päivään erään laki­ehdotuksen
käsittely. Kysymyksessä
ol^evan lakiehdotuksen mukaisesti
anneitaisiin Montrealin lähellä si­jaitsevalle
Cote St. Luc nimiselle

to.
As you know> we have a cat
and a dog, but now we have added
to our meriägerie a budgie bird.
She's a bright green in colour and
i s very cute. Her name is Dixie
and she is being taught to say
"Pretty Dixie". She likes to watch
TV and is interested in the pro-grams
which feature singers, so she
can join in the singing. For tHte
first few days we had her the cat
was very cijrious, but now he knows
better than to hang around the bird-cage
because.he knows he'll have
his paws slapped.
As you know, Erik Hiltunen, Ju­dy
and I played at the Finnish Hall
here in Weller Park on New Year's
Eve. It was a lot of fun and Tm
glad we were asked to play again.
I will be taking my grade three
examinations in music soon and
Tm studying hard for it. l'm also
having an exam in theory grade
one. I hope I will pass them both.
We started band practises last
Sunday and I was glad to see my
friends in the band again. It was
like a happy reunion for ali of us.
The festival pieces we are practisiiig
are Festival March, Ave Maria and
Jealousie. My solos for Hamilton,
St. Catharines and Niagara Falls
are Can^ Vesana, Gypsy^Life and
Roman Guitar. Weil, I guess Td
better go now, so good-bye for now.
