I wonder how many of the rca-de- rs
belleve that thcre Is a haun-te- d
house or a ghost In the grave-yar- d
or a boogey-ma- n under the
bed' No of course wc don't br-lie- ve In such stuff — not In the
daytime And yet there are many
vho are slmply afrald of the dark
But why should anyone bc afrald
of the dark? 111 leave that to be
ansucred by the ones concernect
And vhllc we're on the subject
of ghosts I decldcd to vrite a
short ghost-stor- y and here lt is
Night was settlng In AU day we
had been vandcring in the goldcn
mazc of the autumn woods: and
nov wlth several partrldjes and
ducks In our haversacks we shoul-dere- d
our guns and set homeward
My frlcnd was In a Jovlal mood
cracklng Jokes and fcellng gene-ral- ly
satlsflcd with himself as wc
walked along He was a tali good-lookin- g
youth with a catchy grln
and clear grey eyes Wc had been
friends sincc chlldhood and I
favoured hlm as my best friend
and so lt had been that wc set out
hunting early that mornlng and
oblivlous to the swift passagc of
tlme nlght had caught us un-awarc- s
I looked at my watch The
hands polnted to twenty mlnutes
past slx
The forcst about us was grow-ln- g
darker
We knew wc should be forccd
to spend the nlght under the opcn
sky so wc began to look for a
satisfactory camping place
It was then that my friend no-tice- d the cabin
Thls was a pleasant dlsrovery
Sleeplng out-of-doo- rs In a chllly
autumn nlght was not encourag-In- g
even besldc a camp-flr- e so
we stralghtforward made for the
cabln
True the cabin was not In the
best of repalr but lt was better
than outside And there was a
stove
We klndled a firc Into the old
stove and put some water to boll
for our tea I plucked and cleaned
one of the partrldges and wc
roasted lt on the flrc Adding sait
to lt we washcd lt down wlth
bread buttcr and tra My friend
grinned
"I wonder If thls Is the way the
people who Uved here ote thelr
suppcr?" he askcd
"1 wouldn't wondcr If thcy dld"
I chuckled looking about me
The cabln a single room affalr

logs wlth the roof floor
and ceiling made of rough boards
There was no glass on the two
small Windows ind the spldcrs had
spun thelr webs into the vacant
aperturcs The door was stlll In
place and there was a woodon bed
atfalnst one Wall but no blankets
The stove a rlckety tablc a woo-de- n
bench and an old trunl:
completed the furnKhlngs of the
cabin Evcrythlng was old and the
place had a musty odour
After we had caten wc looked
the cabin over morc carefully and
my frlcnd found thrcc candles
some thoughtful soul had left be-hl- nd
on a shelf He llghtcd one
of them for it had become fairly
dark lndoors by now and plactd
lt on the table Wc starttd to
rummage through the old trurr
In the fllckerlnp candlc llght for
wc were curious to f ind out what
the tenants of the cabln had left
behlnd them
Suddcnly my friend drew back
as If he had been stung
I looked Into the trunk
A human skull was grlnnlng np
at us from amongst the mouldy
old clothes and newpapers I
looked at my friend cdglng closer
to hlm He looked pale
Curioslty got the better of u
and we dared anoher look
lt was stlll there
There was but one concluslon
Someone had hidden a body In-to
the trunk a long tlme ago
The reallzation was awful
We collected our belonglngr and
left the Cabln— for we had no
lancy to sleep in the same room
wlth a human skeleton
By the last llght of the day wc
found ourselves a sheltered spot
under an age-ol- d spruce and bullt
a camp-flr- e The flre looked cheer
ful and the air was cool and pure
We felt there is nothing as com-fortl- ng
as sleeplng beslde a camp-fir- e
in the woods
I looked across at my friend and

We did not slecp that nlght

shadows that rcvcmbled the cyes
Yet lt's rcmarkablc how reallstlc
it had looked In the flickerlnt

Wc felt pretty foollsh

scarc"
Weil thats the extent of my
story lt may not bc any great
