The September 1977 issue of the 'American Ruma-nia-n
Review (published is Cleveland) dlsplays an artic-l- e
entitled „Hungárián Cuítura in' Rumania": The na-m- e
of the author is not indicated The íntfoduction of
the article begins with these statements:
„Misinformation can lead to miscalculation and
liké malicious gossip to hatred This is' the case of a
small but vocal group of self appointed --'patriotíc' Ame-rican
Hungarians which is spending tens and tens of
thousands of dollars on paid advertisements trying to
teli the American public that the Hungarians in Tran-sylvan- ia
do not enjoy cűltural 'freedom under the Ru- -
manian rule There are many things in present day Ro- -
mánia which are not to the liking of most Americans
of Rumanian descent In the matter of the treatment
of minorities in Románia the facts are in favor of
the Bucharest régime Áll facts about the Hungárián
minorities in Transylvania are simple and can be easily
checked One way of finding out the truth is (to make
a personal visit there "
The rest of the article recites a selection of sta-tistic- al
data as proof of the great cűltural freedom
Hungarians enjoy in Rumania „It sounds clear friendly
and reasonable It has only one flaw which is almost
impossible to detect if one is not familiar- - with the
subject: it is built on deceit and not on trüth It
was created more than a half centüry ago and is being
is one small part of that huge Rumanian Hoax which
was 'created more than a half century ago and is being
maintained since then with the purpose of achieving
as much territorial gain as possible through deception
The statistics quoted in the article are of course
the íofficiáí figures" of the Socialist Repüblic of Ru--mán- ia
The way these figures were attai'nedis no longer
a secret As published in the boók „Documented Facts
and Figures on Transylvania" page 57 (Danubian Press
1977) one of the Rumanian censu's supervisors testifiéd

The Rumanians should not forget either that their
own culture was alsó nurtured and aided in its deve- -
lopment by the Hungarians of Transylvania In 1582
the first Bible trárislation in the Vlach language appea-re- d
(at that time the word „Rumanian" was not yet
created) done -- and financed by-Hungaria- ns in order
to acquaint their Rumanian neighbors with the word
of God
While the Rumanian culture as such is scarcely
a century old since Rumania was established only in
1866 the Hungárián culture was already in the Middle
Ages a very active part of Western Christian Culture
which explains the much higher cűltural démands of
the native Transylvánian Hungarians as compared to the
relatively low demand of the Rumanian population Ru-manians
are trying very hard to' hide this fact under
the disguise of an artificially created theory of their
national origin known as the „Daco-Roma- n theory"
This doctrine was conceived at the turn of this century
to sérve as a base to a completety falsified history
which could be used to substantiate Rumanian territo-rial
ambitions and justify their conquest of Transylva-nia
in 1919
Through this theory Rumanians clain to be the
„direct descendants and legal heirs" of the Daks'and
the Romans who occupied Dacia in 107 AD The truth
is that according to Román historiaris the DAKS were
exterminated by the legionsof the Román Empire since
they refused to surrender On the other hánd when
Emperor Aurelian withdrew hisylast outposts from Da-ciáéin
271 AD he ordered every fórt and town destroy- -
ed and the land was -- leit completely devastated and
deserted to the intruding Goths This is an established
historical fact (See: Goos G „Studien zur Geographie
und Geschichte des trajanischen Daciens" Hermannstadt
1874 Alsó Horváth: Transylvania and the history of
the Rumanians Danubian Press 1977) However evén
if somé of the Román legionnaires had deserted and
stayéd behind their descendants would not be of Latin
origin since those legions stationed in the North-Ea-st
of the Empire were cómposed of so-call- ed „barbariari
troops" recruited in the West where the inhabitants
belonged to the different- - Germanic tribes
- Nevertheless the' Rumanians' are of Latin origin
THeir forefathers'were broüght over'from Southern Italy
to the Balkan peninsula by their Greek landlords and
settled near Albánia From there they slowly migratéd
northward In the yeari 1167 their forerunnérs rriigra--
ting Vlachi herdsmen receivedpermission from the King
of Hungary to cróss the Dánube iriveri'inseafeh''of
pásturelands: They' settled first-"the- ' Southern' slópesbf
the lTransylvánian Alps undér their 'owri txibal rulers'
thus' slowly éstáblishíing their claim to thé land wliicK

Nevertheless these Vlach immígrants very seldom

Slowly increasing in nuriíbers they turnéd with
the most vicioús férocity against the native Hungárián
population whenever an opportunity erőse During the 'i_
several Hunganan liberty wars fought for reugious

well that the American visitőr wóuld not bé able to'
find anything Hungárián in tdday's Transylvania since
not only the geographical names were completely chan-ged
but evén such well-know- ri and outstandüig land-mar- ks
of' the Hungárián' culture as medieval churches
folk music folk art and national costumes are being'
claimed as „ancient Rumanian cűltural heritagé" Furt-hernio- re
every Hüngarian who talk to a foreign visitor
is taken afterwardi to the police station where he un-dergo- es
lengthy and brutal questioning Hungárián lea-ders
as clergymen teachers low ranking public offici-al- s
are under' strict surveillance when ever they meet
with „foreigners" and every word they utter 'goes on
the record One wrong word and they end up in prison
on one pretext or another The intimidation of the na-tive
Hungárián population in Transylvania reached such
proportions in the last three decades that many in-tellectu- als
writers teachers cíergymen took their own
lives in order to escape the ordeal called „minórity
éxistence in Rumania"
It is indeed sad that evén those Rumanians who
chose the exile instead of subjecting themselves to the
communist régime do not realize that lasting peace
in the Danubian Basin can be built only on good
will tolerance and mutual respect between the coexis--'
ting peoples of that area That sooner or later in one
way or another a mutually -- acceptable framework will
be found by all the neighboring and territorially over-lapin- g
nations of Central and East Central Europe
which will enable them to expand their narrow ' fronti-er- s
of today intő a larger economical and political unit
in their search of permanent peace and prosperity It
must be clear to everyone that such enduring unity
can be built only on honesty understanding good will
mutual respect ánd the strict adherence to factual truth
As long as the Rumanians in their own country as
well as outside of it stubbornly cling to their pre- -
sént-day- - political notion that advantages can be gained
and national goals accomplished at the expense of ot--
hers through the use of deceit: they will in no way
be able to jóin the progressive peace-seekin- g communi-t- y
of coexisting European nations -
