VAPAUDEN LIIKKEESTÄ Esko Dahhlei in Fish Business Hello Margaret and everyone else. What a nice Good Priday and the Saturday .following it had. On Priday there was a strcng, cold wind blowing. It also rained. On Saturday moming I woke up, tooked out of the window and it was snowing but Easter Simday was wann and sunny. On Thursday night my father, mothör and brother w€nt down to my uncles tb fish. They were flshing for smelts. They stayed tili 2 am. and caught half a sack of smelts. I cleaned most cf them the next day and what a job! r got SO tired of looking at fish that t never ate one of them. "Ihere were so many fish that I decided to go into the fish business so on Saturday moming with the eggs and fish, my brother and I went tö the city. I went to the first house and asked the lady if she wanted any eggs. The lady said "Sure, two äozen large". I then said "Wou]d you like any fish?" She asked what kind they were and asked me to brlng them into the house. She said "Sure, I like that kind of fish". I said "they cost forty cents a pound". She said "I'll take a pound". My trouble was that I didn't have a scale so I decided to.give nine fish and call it a pound. I put nine fish on the ladies plate but the lady said she didn't think that v?as a Ib. After a llt-tle argument she gave up and said "Alright there's a pound there." That day we sold about II pounds of fish. We also sold some at the market. On Sunday my little banty hen's nest was wrecked by the pigs sb I don't expect any chicks. Thats ali for now. Cheerio! Esko Barju, R.R. 1, St. Ann*s, Ont. Irma Cut Coat Into a Shortie Hello sister Mar^Buet and ali the readers and writers of this page. Here I am again *scribbling a few Iines to 5'et you know Tm still living af ter the snowstorm-we had on Good Rose Attended an Uneventful Meeting E>ear big sister Margaret. Its time to write again. The rocster is dead now but I feel a little blt sorry fot it. You asked me how it.tasted. The truth is that I hardly even got a taste of it because there was only one rooster to be divi-ded amongst eleven people, and some of the people could eat a whole Chicken if they wanted to. The ice is o|f Rainy or Bartteti Xake. We had pur car out today for the first time and are the roads ever awful. We only got d^fc once. Am I ever glad the Ea«ter holidays are here. We never even got our re-port cards. - - Our dogs are barking and do they ever make an awful racket. I cut my last summer's coat into a shortie coat becai^e I burnt the bottom of it at school last Winter when I hung it beside the stove to dry. It would have been too short any-way. We got the travelllng library at school. There are quite a few good books in it. Tve onjy read "Porest Patrol" and "A Travel Book." The first one was the best of the two. Weil. I think ITI slgn off here hop-ing everybody had a happy Easter. Be sure to enjoy yoiu- holidays, kids. Bye for now! Irma Heinonen, Starrat P.O., Ont. Sylvia's Riddle: Dear sister Margaret and ali the readers and writers of this page. I have been lazy because I hBven*t been writing for a long: tlifte. I have been knitting ä päir of mitts for myself and doing a piUowcase for my mother. TheJ mitts | h a t l knit were the first ones I have ever knit. Spring is here. I; hftve seen two robins and 24 crows ali together. I heard a frog singing when we came school. I would like to ask a riddle. the first riddle I have ever wrltten to the Vapaus. What fish is found in every Mrd cage? I will answer it in my next letter I think I wlll dose my letter now. Cheerio! Sylvia Salmi, ~ Wahnapitae, Ont. Secret Writing Here's a trick that magicians and spies used to use before chemicals were invented for invisible Writing. You'll need half a lemon, an ordinary penholder and a cleah pen-point. Squceze the lemon Juice into a little bottle or juice glass, then use it as though it were ink. Yoii won't be able to see your wfitin&. No one can see it, in fact, imless he knows the secret of making it visible. •- , The trick is to hold the paper with the secret writing up to something very warm — the hotter the better — and the writing will slowly appear. An electric light bulb will do, or the flame on a stove (be careful not to burn yourself or the paper.) Now you can write an obsolutely private letter to someone. Miriam Prefers School to Holidays HeUo sister Margaret and aU the readers of this page. Weil. its a long thne since I last wrote to this page. How is big sister feeling? Fm feel-ing f ine now and Tm happy thäl my side is better. • ^ Is it ever windy out today and some-what colder than yesterday. Easter holidays are here again but I'm getting lonesome for my school-work because I like it so much. Dld Margaret like schoolwork before? I Just wouldn't do anything else at ali. I had a good report card. My average was 78 14/17 per cent. The ice is nearly gone off the lake. I wish it would go so I could go fish-ing. - Spring has come at last with its welcome -weather and birds, flowers, etc. I hope sister Margaret received my Easter Card that I sent. I wish my holidays would Just fly so fast because the time goes faster at school. Here are a few questions. What is the brightest sUr or planet? What causes the eclipsc of the sun? I'll give the answers in my next letter. Weil. did you see the ecllpse of the moon on Wednesday? I didn't see It because I went to bed at 9 o'clock and fell asleep inunediately. it «nowed a foot ot^a»w. The ice
is o|f Rainy or Bartteti Xake.
We had pur car out today for the
first time and are the roads ever
awful. We only got d^fc once.
Am I ever glad the Ea«ter holidays
are here. We never even got our re-port
cards. - -
Our dogs are barking and do they
ever make an awful racket.
I cut my last summer's coat into a
shortie coat becai^e I burnt the
bottom of it at school last Winter
when I hung it beside the stove to dry.
It would have been too short any-way.
We got the travelllng library at
school. There are quite a few good
books in it. Tve onjy read "Porest
Patrol" and "A Travel Book." The
first one was the best of the two.
Weil. I think ITI slgn off here hop-ing
everybody had a happy Easter. Be
sure to enjoy yoiu- holidays, kids. Bye
for now!

Sylvia's Riddle:
Dear sister Margaret and ali the

I have been lazy because I hBven*t

been knitting ä päir of mitts for
myself and doing a piUowcase for my
mother. TheJ mitts | h a t l knit were
the first ones I have ever knit.
Spring is here. I; hftve seen two
robins and 24 crows ali together. I
heard a frog singing when we came
school.
I would like to ask a riddle. the first
riddle I have ever wrltten to the Vapaus.
What fish is found in every Mrd
cage?
I will answer it in my next letter
I think I wlll dose my letter now.

Secret Writing
Here's a trick that magicians and
spies used to use before chemicals
were invented for invisible Writing.
You'll need half a lemon, an ordinary
penholder and a cleah pen-point.
Squceze the lemon Juice into a little
bottle or juice glass, then use it as
though it were ink. Yoii won't be able
to see your wfitin&. No one can see it,
in fact, imless he knows the secret
of making it visible. •- ,
The trick is to hold the paper with
the secret writing up to something
very warm — the hotter the better —
and the writing will slowly appear. An
electric light bulb will do, or the flame
on a stove (be careful not to burn
yourself or the paper.)
Now you can write an obsolutely
private letter to someone.

Näin viimeisestä perheen nuorempien
osastosta kirjoittajien ottaneen vähän
kevätlomaa kun ei ollut montaakaan
kirjettä.
Kyllä mbiulla on ollut kiirettä. Minä
olen ollut jo pellolla viinirypäle-puita
sitomassa. Siinä pltääollakau-nis
ilma ja lauantaina oli auringonpaiste.
Tällä viikolla meillä on Punaisen
Bisiin illanvietto ja minun pitää opetella
.suomenkielinen laulu.
Minä säin Suomesta kirjeen. Siihen
pitäisi vastata myös. Sain sen
Sinikka Vainionpäältä Vimpelistä.
Hän oli ottanut osoitteeni tästä osastosta.
Nyt lopetan ja toivon hauskaa kevättä

Halloo siskot ja veljet!
Monet kiitokset kauneista pääslätls-korteista,
joita lähetitte minulle Oscar,
Inna. Violet, Diana, Miriam, Margaret,
Ellen ja Ilmi. Aloitin jouluna
"scrapbookan" Johon panen kaikki lä-hettämänne
kortit, niitä on mukava
katsella vuosien perästä.
Postilaatikkoni oli niin täynnä tänään,
ettei voi missään tapauksessa
samsa teidän laiskotelleen lomanne al-
Icana.
Tervetuloa perheeseemme Laura
Hellstein, South Porcuplnesta. Kirjota
vain usein meille, olemme aina iloisia
kuulleissamme sinusta.
Sophlelto sekä Miriamilta on tällä
viikolla kaksi kirjettä. Hyvin kirjoitettu,
tytöt!
Kyllähän kirjeestäsi saa helposti
selvää, Elvi, kirjoita vain edelleenkin
suomeksi.
Punhitsepas Josktis uteliaisuuden
vuoksi 9 smelttiä, Esko, että tiedät
painavatko ne enemmän tai vähemmän
kiiin paunan. Olisi mielenkiintoista
tietää! *
Minä leikkautin myös tukkani lyhyeksi,
Ellen, ja pidän siitä niin kovin,
etten aio antaa sen kasvaa. pitkäksi
vielä pitkään aikaan. Lyhkäinen
tilkka on niin siistiVja helppo hoitaa.
Toivon, että veljesi on Jälleen terve,
Hm!.
Miksi et jotenkin yritä ansaita rahaa
polkupyörälle, Melvin? Voisit
vaikka kysellä isältäsi töitä niin paljon,
että pyöräraha tulisi ansaituksi
Monella eri tavalla voi ansaita polkupyörän
jos vain ahkerasti yrittää.
Kiitos myös kirjeistänne Inna, Aino,
Emmi, Hanna, Sylvi. Rose, Ja Oscar.
Ei siis muuta kuin hj^västl ensi
viikkoon saakka!
Siskonne Margaret.

Päivää sisko Margaret ja kaikki kirjoittajat

Nyt kun meillä on pääsiäisloma koulusta
niin on alkaa kirjoittaa ja yritän
taas suomeksi, vaikka se tuntuu niin
vaikealta. Meillä tulee tänne kohta
kesän kaunein aika kun hedelmäpuut
alkavat kukkia. Kalkki puut tekevät
valkoisen kukan mutta persikka puun
kukka on vaaleanpunainen.
Minä olin eilen serkkuni kanssa Niagara-
putouksella, ja siellä oli paljon
ihmisiä. Oli kaunis, aurinkoinen päivä.
Oli minulla vähän surullistakin
pääsiäisenä kun kissani ei tullut aamulla
kotiin. Minä kyselin sitä naapureista
turhaan. Tänä aamuna se
tuli navettaan ja minä en päästä sitä
ulos nyt vähään aikaan.
