In declaring 1986 the International Year of Peace, the United Nations challenged each of us to work for peace as both individuals and as citizens of the world community. This season offers Canadians an opportunity to pause and reflect upon our good fortune as a nation free of war and civil conflict. We are a nation of For generations people from many lands have come to this country to find a new beginning — to seek the peace and freedom they were denied elsewhere. In Canada they establis-hed a society which honours its multicultural heritage, a fact that is appar-ent as a variety of celebrations take place throughout this festive season.
