Sixteen years had passed since the
day on which the Blessed
Constantine the Philosopher had
bidden Methodius, his faithful and
inseparable assistant, farewell:
"Brother, we two ploughed a
furrow together. After coming to
the end of my life I fall on the field.
You dearly loved Mount Olympus,
but do not abandon your teaching
because of it. . . ."
After the death of his brother,
Methodius was left alone to plough
the field and sow the spiritual bread
of the Slavs. A tremendous burden
was laid on his shoulders. But he
did not despair.
He continued more zealously
than ever to carry out the behest of
Constantine the Philosopher. Like
the latter, he had a perfect mind
and gentle, and striking
speech— gentle and kind for the
common folk, who heard him
eagerly, and strong and fiery lor the
enemies.
But his strength was leaving him.
Outside everything was in blossom,
but his life was running out. Only in
his eyes there was a pure and deep
light, as there had always been.
He remembered how he and Cyril
had arrived in lovely Venice, and
how there malicious and fanatical
bishops and priests had cast
themselves upon the Philosopher
"like crows on a falcon," crying:

Kada je tajna ame-rick- a

Gadaffija i Fidel Castra
to je bilo "herojsko delo
hrabrih americkih antikomu-nista- '.
"Man, tell us why you have
created books for the Slavs and
teach them by these books, since no
one else ever found them before:
We know only three languages in
which it is honorable to write
books: Latin, Hebrew and Greek...
The Philosopher calmly answered:
"Doth not the sun shine upon us
all? Do we not all equally breathe the
air? And are ye not ashamed to rec-ognize
only three languages
and condemn all other peoples and
tribes to remain blind and deaf?...
Even inanimate objects have a voice-- a
pipe or a rebec. If they do not
produce different sounds, how
will ye know whether a pipe or a
rebec is being played?"
Cyril gave many more examples
and proofs to defend himself, and
ended with the words that it was
better to speak five words and have
them understood by thousands of
people, than to speak a thousand
words and have them understood
by only five persons
He destroyed the tnlinguists like
fire and left for Rome with
Methodius. Now Methodius lay on
his death bed. He did not fear
death No! He longed for peace,—
peace would be his "reward for his
many labors."
He only feared for his disciples
His sworn enemy, Wiching, would
scatter them like chicks. Would
they find shelter and hospitality

anywhere? The best thing would be
for them to leave for Bulgaria. Tsar
Boris had long been awaiting men
like them.
Imperceptibly his eyes lost their
brilliance. On the third day he was
delirious and began to call the
Philosopher by name.
"Be at peace, brother, I am here,"
a gentle voice spoke, and someone
took Methodius's trembling hand.
It was his young and capable
disciple Clement who, together with
Gora7d, Nahum, Angelarius and
some of the other disciples were
watching over him in this last hour.
Methodius gazed up at Clement
with unseeing eyes. He believed that
his brother had come. For a
moment he revived. He tried to say
something, but no sound came
from his dry lips.
"I have come to take you to youi
beloved mountain, brother!"
Clement added, deeply moved "I
know how much you loved it. Come
now, we shall depart today..."
Methodius did noi hear him. He
seemed to have falien asleep.
Clement bent over him and
reverently kissed the saintly hand of
the First Teacher
