There is now a bannerof hope, hope
for world peace without end— hope for
the opportunity to develop culturally
to the fullest, and to bring into being
the noblest human ideals. And this
hope has been given to the peoples of
Europe and to the whole world by the
Helsinki Conference which, we be-lieve,
will prove to be the opening of a
new stage of history in our time.
Among citizens, artists and the
peoples of the world, there are no
boundary divisions, no barriers. Inder
pendently of the continent, the race,
the nation from which we originate, all
of us desire to live in brotherhood, to
develop our creative capacities, to
move altogether "from the realm of
necessity to the kingdom of the free."
We are not those who raised the
walls of hate; they were raised by
those forces which seek to ensure their
own existence, their own well-bein-g
and their wealth by repressing man-kind,
by repressing all peoples.
Those walls, it is our will, is our
hope, we shall quite demolish one day.
In our struggle to accomplish this age
old human dream, art and general cul-tural
activity can play a fundamental
role.
For art does not "imitate" life. Art
discovers life; it draws person to per-son
irrespective of time and place.

Thanks to its international language,
it opens the way to the mutual under-standing
of peoples, to the awakening,
indeed, of mutual trust, to the building
of friendship and peace.
Twenty centuries ago a Greek scho-lar,
commenting on Aristophanes'
comedy entitled appropriately, "Irin-i- "
(Peace), said, "Aristophanes stir-red
his fellow citizens to a passion for
peace, making clear how many ills
were engendered by war and how
many were the blessings of peace."
The scholar added, "Aristophanes
was not alone in counselling them to
love peace ; numerous poets have done
the same. And precisely because poets
are no different from other men of
wisdom, they are called Masters, be-cause
they counsel good sense through
the medium of their works."
This is the role that can and must be
played by art also in our day; to be-come
the "wise spokesman" for the
people, the bridge that links them by
mutual understanding, and which is
the herald and the shield of world
peace.
We are fully aware that this is not
an easy role to fulfill. This work has
been initiated an infinite number of
times, only to be undone by those very
forces that live by the death of others
and thrive by debasing mankind.
My country, Greece, has paid a
particularly heavy price to this
machine.of war and hate. And now to-day,
out of ruin, martyred Cyprus
gropes for reason in its struggle for
national independence, while further
away, Lebanon is being massacred
and the whole Middle East is being
sacrificed on the altar of the im-perialist
Moloch.
The Helsinki Conference came up
with a reply to these criminal con-spiracies
that was full of hope. If na-tions
and individuals can put the prin-ciples
of this conference into practice,
mutual massacre and general exter-mination
will bow to understanding
and solidarity.

The Helsinki Conference has given
us hope. It is for us now to transform
that hope into deeds, to turn human
ideals into reality. If we really want
this, we can achieve it. And if we can,
our wor,ld will become a place worth
living in, and no longer an arena in
which people are massacred so that
despots may thrive.
In the spirit of the Helsinki Final
Act, and more particularly in the in-terpretation
of those passages in the
document which deal with the role of
culture, there has already emerged in
my country a cultural movement that
brings into close association represen-tatives
of literature and of all
branches of the arts, the object of
which is to establish closer contact be-tween
themselves and the Greek
people, to enrich and raise the general
intellectual level.
On of the objectives, among others,
of this Pan-Hellen- ic Cultural Move-ment
is the setting up in the shortest
time possible channels of contact with
similar movements other European
countries, to strengthen the bonds be-tween
our respective peoples and to
encourage the spirit of peace and
cooperation envisaged in the Hel-sinki
Final Act.
It is to be hoped that similar
movements and organizations in the
field of culture will be created in other
countries of Europe to help in the
flourishing of genuine art amongst the
people, corresponding to their hopes
and to the purest human ideals.

U Medrldu je 27. septembra ot-vore- na
Izlolba 31 djela Pabla Pica-ss- a
— neSto zasad bez prosedana.
To je uJedno prva velika Picasso-v- a
izlolba u Spanjolskoj — velikog
umjetnika koji je tivio u samoiz-gnanstv- u
za sve vrijeme diktature
generate Franca. Na izloibi su Pi-casso- va
djela iz perioda 1901. do
1968. koja, naravno, pripadaju raz-nl- m
stllovlma, od kubistidkog do
naturallstidkog.
U vrijeme kad se Spanjolska sve
viSe окгебе prema demokraciji vr-ijeme
je i za prikazivanje Picassa
kod кибе, kaiu Spanjolci. Jedina je
ironija u 6injenici da su Picassova
djela izloiena u madridskoj galeriji
koja joS uvijek nosi ime Huana
Marda, Jednog od glavnih podrla-vaoc- a

po Francu, Hitleru i Musoli-nij- u.

bila premijera iilma "Njegovo tajno
ime je Lukad". Junak filma je ma-dars- ki
knjiievnik Mate Zalka, lege-ndar'- ni
general Luka6, koji je u
Spanjolskom gradanskom ratu or-ganizi- rao
i upravljao obranom Ma-dri- da
1936. godine, koji je opsjeda-l- a
faSistidka vojska generala Fran-ca.
U ovom dugometralnom filmu
nalaze se i originalne filmske vrpce
iz gradanskog rata, od kojih se
neke odnose na osnivanje interna-cionalni- h
brigade. Film je reiirao
Grk Imanuel Haharias, koji ved
skoro dvadeset godina radi sa
"Mosfilmom". U obrazlolenju teme
koju je obradio u ovom filmu, Ha-harias
kaie:
— Zelim da dobijem odgovor na
pitanje zaSto jedan pisac, Mate
Zalka, Clan inteligencije, odlazi u
rat kao dobrovoljac. OpSirnije re-den- o:
