Hereby issues this Executive Declaration
in Observance of
SEPTEMBER 6-- 8, 1985
AS
YUGOSLAV-AMERICA- N DAYS
This festival weekend is a time for Michigan citizens to enjoy the culture, music, food, and
traditions of our Yugoslavian friends and neighbors. Traditionally, this festival has been
recognized as an entertaining and enjoyable activity for the entire family.
Y ugoslavian immigrants first came to the State of Michigan and the Metropolitan Detroit area
in the early part of the 20th century. These citizens have a great patriotism for America and a
great love for the customs and heritage of their ancestors.
The Yugoslav-America- n community in Michigan seeks to exemplify the unity of the peoples of
Yugoslavia and, more importantly, to set an example for Yugoslav-America- ns in fostering
harmony among all citizens.
Therefore, I, James J. Blanchard, Governor of the Slate of Michigan, do hereby declare
September 6 through 8, 1985, as YUGOSLAV-AMERICA- N DAYS in Michigan. ! encourage all
Michigan citizens to recognize the valuable contributions made by Yugoslav-America- ns to the
quatfty of life in our Great Lake State.
