i1. TO CONFERENCE OF "NASE
NOVINE" FROM SOUTHERN
CALIFORNIA ODBOR
This conference is meeting in the
midst of a general attack on the wor-king
class by the profit hungry
American capitalist class. The Ca-nadian
workers we are sure face no
better. No day passes by without a
reminder of this attack as the daily
newsmedia reports of the struggles
of the airline workers, steel wor-kers,
or the meat packers in Austin,
Minnesota. These struggles are not
an effort to improve the conditions
of labor, but are a resistance to dra-stic
reduction in their living stan-dards.
On top of this, or shall we say in
conjunction with the attack on li-ving
standards, is a feverish prepa-ration
for war. The ruling class has
never reconciled itself to the suc-cessful
existence of Socialism. It
still dreams of destroying all Socia-list
countries and the new emerging
national liberation countries. With
the huge stockpiling of nuclear
weapons, the very existence of the
human race is at stake.
It is, therefore, obvious that this
conference is not meeting in a va-cuum,
but in the midst of this tur-moil
and struggle. The problems of
the labor movement and the peace
movement are also problems that
Nase novine must cope with, give
leadership and support to, as well
as the women's movement.
It is with these thoughts that the
Southern California subscribers
and supporters of Na§e novine met
and discussed what can be done to
improve and build our paper. Fore-most
in our discussion was that is-sue
after issue comes out without a
single line of labor reportage. Nase
novine is, after all, a workers, paper
among the Yugoslavs in Canada and
the United States. While we most
certainly cherish news from "stari
kraj", its overwhelming dominance
to the exclusion of news from this
struggle and makes it impotent on
the North American political sce-ne.
The second most discussed items-wa- s
the need for at least one page
AN 111
City of Toronto
in the English language. There ap-pears
frequent references to Nase
novine as a paper of Yugoslav immi-grants,
a sort of an exclusive Yugo-slav
immigrant paper. We feel that
Nase novine should be a newspaper
for Yugoslav immigrants and their
children and grandchildren. After
all, there are today more Yugoslav
AmericanCanadians than there
are Yugoslav immigrants, and that
is where the future of the paper
lies. During our meeting, one of the
participants exhibited an English
page of Slobodna rec of 1946! If Slo-bod- na red thought that an English
page was necessary, what about
1986?
Recognizing that it is easier to
suggest than to project, it was felt
that a field person should be selec-ted
to spend some time in concen-trated
Yugoslav communities par-ticlar- ly in the Great Lakes region
and build the readership. An exam-ple
was given that Cleveland had a
city election with two of Yugoslav
parentage contesting each other,
and no news or discussion of the
election was printed, a serious
omission.
More news and articles of all So-cialist
countries was also expres-sed.
There was resentment expres-sed
at the request of the editor that
articles for Nase novine should be
typed. How many workers have
typewriters or can type? It was
thought that a revival of the "Kalen-dar- "
would help financially and at
the same time serve an educational
purpose.
Money alone cannot solve the
problems of Nase novine. The pa-per
must reflect the class struggle
in North America and become part
of it.

Mark HALLER
