B a y sled of dogs conducted by himself on a winter journey
of f u l l y 2,000 miles, f r om F o r t Simpson, on the Mackenzie,
to Oak P o i n t , near the southern end of L a k e Manitoba. We
left the former point on November 30, 1869, and reached
the latter place on F e b r u a r y 22, 1870. We accompanied
the O l d H u d s o n B a y w i n t e r packet, due to leave F o r t Simpson
annually on December 1, F o r t Chipewyan J a n u a r y 2,
I s l e a l a Crosse J a n u a r y 20, and Carlton House, Saskatchewan,
early i n F e b r u a r y ; but hy r a p i d t r a v e l l i n g the party
managed to arrive at Chipewyan nine or ten days1 ahead
of time. After a rest of several days we started w i t h my
own and another team of fresh dogs c a r r y i n g our baggage
and provisions. No time was lost on the march; i n fact, we
got over the ground between the different Company's posts
at a very r a p i d gait, and always had fresh baggage, men,
and dogs, while the packet was dispatched independently on
the usual dates from F o r t Chipewyan, post to post, to
C a r l t o n . By this means I was enabled to give frequent
rests, exclusive of Sundays, to my own team and personal
servant, and also spend about a month i n the aggregate w i th
friends and acquaintances on the way. We never delayed
the packet; on the contrary, when we f i n a l l y overtook its
bearers, our fourth and their seventh day out f r om Carlton,
the united party made better progress, and but for the first
R e d R i v e r insurrection of Louis R i e l it w o u l d have arrived
at F o r t Garry, i f not earlier, certainly not later, than the
usual date. When we reached the Company's post at Touchwood
H i l l s , there were orders for the packet to report at
F o r t P e l l y instead of proceeding by the direct route by way
of F o r t E l l i e e . This necessitated the adoption of a much
longer and more tedious course by way of F o r t s Qu'appelle
and P e l l y , Shoal Lake, Waterhen R i v e r , Manitoba House,
Oak P o i n t , and White Horse P l a i n s to F o r t Garry, which
was reached on F e b r u a r y 25, 1870. H a v i n g long lost the
b r i e f i t i n e r a r y of this journey, I cannot at this late date
give details, but I firmly believe that the time actually con-
